Please help save Elvira’s eyes’!

Hey All, I’m Elvira’s mama, owner, poop picker upper and best friend.

Elvira is an 8 year old French Bulldog living in the Midlands, Uk and will soon be embarking on a new adventure in Norway.

Elvira was recently injured during moving when a Pop Vinyl figure dropped on her head. She was taken straight to the vets for tests and the vet concluded that her eye had not been damaged and she was given drops and some painkillers, great! Or, so I thought.

A month on, her eye is still noticeably swollen and cloudy looking so we scheduled another vet visit on Friday 19th July and unfortunately she was diagnosed with glaucoma in her left eye. I was told that the pressure in her “good eye” was also higher than normal and that her left eye is at risk of rupturing.

I was given three options:

1) Topical eye drops in the affected eye. This was the riskier of the three options due to only being able to treat the issue if it’s primary glaucoma.

2) Referral to an eye specialist to investigate more into whether her left eye can be saved and also look into why it’s happened and if she’s at risk of losing both of her eyes.

Consultations vary from £265 - £650 varying on location and does not include the various tests/treatments so the vets are unable to give price estimates and it could very well be that we still have to remove the eye(s).

3) Enucleation - full removal of the left eye but won’t give us a clear picture on the cause of the glaucoma or whether or not her remaining eye can be saved.

Elvira is provisionally booking in for enucleation on Thursday 25th July and I have been quoted £1800 - £2000 for the operation. We’re also going to try and get in with a specialist early next week but as mentioned earlier, these costs will very quickly start to mount. Elvira has been always been insured, sadly through some miscommunication her insurance isn’t valid for this illness.
