I’ve started this gofundme to raise money for my gender affirming top surgery.
Health care provision for transgender individuals in the UK is in a state of crisis; waitlists are years long, and the current political and social climate is only creating more and more barriers to access for life-saving, gender-affirming care. Many politicians and doctors are actively resistant to providing care to trans people who desperately need support to be themselves. Getting care on the NHS is a game of chance and extreme patience just to make incremental progress, and can be taken away at any point.
Because of this, I’ve been pursuing my health care through private clinics where necessary, which brings a far greater level of security - but at a cost. I’ve been on HRT for 6 months - the positive impact of this has been indescribable. But my dysphoria with my chest means I still struggle to feel comfortable or confident in my body. I have constant back and shoulder pain from binding, even with breaks and high quality binders. Sitting in the sun, swimming, wearing tight clothing are just some of the things that I can’t really do without experiencing constant distress. It’s become even clearer that I won’t be able to live fully as my self until I can undergo surgery.
I’m in the process of scheduling a consultation for surgery, and I’m estimating that the cost of the whole process including weeks off work will be around £11,500. Working hospitality in London doesn't make saving easy and getting to this point has drained a lot of my savings. Of course what I can save, will be put towards surgery and its surrounding costs, which is why I’ve set the goal a little lower than my estimate.
So all that being said…. ANY support you can offer to get me closer to finally being at home in my body, would be so, so appreciated, as I know not many people can spare much at the moment.
