This is Elsa she is 5 1/2 years old and is currently suffering from a spontaneous pneumothorax and will need surgery. Sheis hospitalized with chest tubes in place to keep her chest cavity from filling with air until the surgeon can see on her on Monday, July 28th. I took her into the on Wednesday, July 23rd for what I thought might be kennel cough, X-rays revealed that she had a pneumothorax with partial collapse of her right lung and was transferred to the Animal Emergency Hospital where she had a needle inserted into both sides of her chest to release the air. This procedure was performed 2 times over the course of 2 days, a cat scan was also performed to hopefully find out the cause. The radiologist that read the ct scan said there is no evidence of a need for immediate surgical intervention as there were not any foreign materials, visible bullae (air sacks), visible trauma. The vet and radiologist both agreed that we can start with a conservative treatment by getting as much air out as they could and putting her on strict rest and hopefully not refill with air. We agreed that she would be more relaxed at home resting since she was no longer in distress and breathing normally, so we brought her home Friday morning. Friday night we took her back because her breathing didn’t seem normal, another X-ray was done and showed a very small amount of air that was noted after the last needle tap. There really was not a visible change noted, we chose to do one last needle tap and they were able to remove almost a liter of air, repeat X-ray looked great and almost normal again. We brought her home and she was resting comfortably and breathing normally until about 5:30 pm this evening (26th) we noticed she was breathing fast and took her back to the hospital. X-rays show an accumulation of air in her chest cavity again. The surgeon will not be able to see Elsa until Monday morning so she has been admitted and a chest tube placed to be able to release the air as needed. We expect that she will need a lung lobectomy to solve the problem. We have already spent 9700.00 and will still need to pay for the cost of surgery which can range in price upwards of another 6-7, 000. We hate to ask for donations but we are desperate as we have already maxed out our care credit, borrowed what we can and have drained our accounts. We realize we should have had pet insurance and have it now but that will not help our current situation. Please consider donating to help us save our baby girls life. I have attached the invoices for what we have paid already and the treatment plan from this evening showing the deposit. One I have the surgery plan on Monday I will include that as well.
