My name is Ellyse and I am senior student at the University of Michigan. Please read the full-lenth description down below explaining my fundraiser.
I have always had a passion for people. I love hearing other people's stories and finding connections. I care very deeply about people and it is incredibly important to me that people are treated right. Because of this dedication for social justice, I hope someday to pursue a career in social work. I want to meet people, learn about them, their wants, their needs, their strengths, and weaknesses, and help to implement programs into communities that will bring empowerment and lasting positive change. Maybe it's creating an after school arts program, or a community garden, or a day care for children run by the elderly. I don't know exactly what my future will look like, but I know I will figure it out as I continue my education.
The University of Michigan offers a fantastic study abroad opportunity called Contemporary London. The program involves taking courses in community action and social change. The program offers a European, and specifically London, perspective on theories of empowerment and multiculturalism in modern societies to best understand community wellbeing, incorporating mutiple interactions with nonprofit organizations across London. I was lucky enough to be accepted for this incredible experience. This trip is right up my alley, aligning so well with my educational and career goals, it seems perfect.
Unfortunately, perfection is not cheap. The program fee, cost of room and board, airfare, and tution adds up to a hefty $12,000. I am hopeful that I will be able to recieve some aid and scholarships for this opportunity, but there is no guarantee. I don't come from the most financially stable situation, and without my academic scholarship provided by the university, I would never have been able to afford attending college. I am going to do all I can to budget and save, but I don't know that I can do it on my own.
I have so many dreams for the future in social work, and I truly believe that this trip will be astronomically beneficial for those aspirations. I don't want money to be the one obstacle that stands in my way.
Thus, I am reaching out to you, my friends, family, peers, advisors, local and far extended communites asking for help. I am asking for donations of any size, any amount. Every dollar adds up, and gets me closer to making this fantastic trip become a reality. Please consider my fund and know that anything you can give me, I am more grateful for than words can do justice.
