In 2016 while still living in Chicago, Ellen was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an incurable brain cancer. Over the next four years she would undergo two brain surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, and two clinical trials. Tray was by her side throughout this battle, even after she and Tray moved back to live with her parents in Louisville. Tray provided companionship and love until he died in 2019. Even as Ellen was in the last weeks of her life, she was contemplating adopting a rescue dog as a companion. But this fundraiser is not for Ellen.
Tray was just one of many rescue animals in Ellen's life. Saving Tray was not a one-off for Ellen, it was a way of life and a reflection of her core values. Every pet she had from childhood on were all rescues. There are many, many dogs and cats in need of rescue and Ellen would have saved many more of them if she could have. This fundraiser is to help Ellen do just that.
The family's intention is to establish a permanent endowment in Ellen's name that will provide annual gifts to worthy charities that help cats and dogs. Your contribution to this endowment will positively affect the lives of countless homeless and rescue pets for many generations to come.
