We all know how important extracurricular activities are for our girls. We are fortunate enough to provide our daughters with the opportunities to learn from skilled coaches and teachers in the areas of music, sports, art, and dance.
Ashlyn has learned so much through softball, running, Odyssey of the Mind, flag football, and most recently basketball. She’s developed confidence and self-discipline as well as teamwork and time management skills.
Over the past 6 months, Ashlyn has grown to love the game of basketball, a game she barely played prior to this Fall. Ashlyn herself will be the first to tell you that OLP’s 8th grade coach Phil Odom is a huge part of the reason she loves basketball. He is knowledgeable and intense and he truly cares about her development as a basketball player and as a young woman. Besides teaching her the game of basketball, he has shared with her opportunities for community service and has spoken to her about the value of helping those less fortunate than her.
Phil’s role as Director of Youth Enrichment for high school and middle school students in the Scranton School District exposes him to the needs of the youth in Scranton on a daily basis. In addition to running fundraisers in the Fall which provide Thanksgiving dinners for those in need and providing Christmas gifts to poor children in the Scranton school district who would otherwise go without, Phil also manages and coaches Keystone Karma, an AAU basketball organization that consists of highly skilled and disciplined young women from Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. Karma offers these girls the chance to grow and play at a very competitive level regardless of each player’s ability to pay. He and John Jerzorwski volunteer their time and share their coaching expertise with a group of 24 girls, ages 13 to 17, and personally raise the funds necessary to cover the costs for any girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to play travel basketball.
Of the 24 girls who will play on the two Keystone Karma teams this year, more than half are being sponsored and Phil has been hard at work identifying sponsors for each of them. The sponsorships cover each girl’s share of tournament fees and practice facility costs. The girls themselves will run fundraisers throughout the season to help offset the costs of travelling to each of their tournaments.
This year, in addition to the costs of practice facilities, tournament fees, and travel expenses, the organization needs to replace its old uniforms. Ashlyn and I have offered to help Phil and John raise the funds for the uniforms.
The team needs to raise approximately $3600 to cover uniforms that will stay with the program over the next several years. If you are interested in contributing to this team, any amount would be greatly appreciated!
