Ella's Surgery

Melissa and I were away in Germany when she got the call saying her dog, Ella, had been hit by a car and needed surgery. Ella’s right leg bone was completely snapped in two. Melissa had the choice of four options; $1200 for a splint that had no guarantees on working on a break that bad, amputate the leg, $4200 for a metal plate to be installed, or to put Ella down.
I think the majority of pet owners would agree that the last option isn’t really an option and it seemed non sensical to cheap out on a splint when there was a higher risk of failure. Amputation was weighed as a serious option but the vet advised that there was a high chance of saving the leg’s function with the metal plate.
After an overnight stay at the vet and the surgery Melissa was up to $5200 in debt. After two weeks of keeping Ella off the leg we went in yesterday for further X-rays to find that, even with the vets confidence that the metal plate was the right choice, the screws had slipped and the leg wasn’t healing properly. She just went under again this morning to have an additional plate put in for $800.
It’s always tough to reach out for help, but $6000 is a burden that most people aren’t able to handle. The weight of debt is stifling and paired with the stress and concern for a beloved pet has been overwhelming for her. That’s why I’ve made this campaign on Melissa and Ella’s behalf as a way to alleviate financial and personal stress.
Those who know Ella know that she’s the sweetest dog around and those who know Melissa know she’s as hard working as it gets.
