Ella's Journey

Ella Jeanne was born on May 27, 2018. During the delivery, they quickly discovered that Ella was stuck in the pelvis, so she had to be removed via C-section and even then, they had a hard time getting her out. The medical team found that she was not breathing on her own and mom had lost a lot of blood. Ella needed to be rushed to Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. Once there, she was placed on a cooling blanket to lower her body temperature and slow any harmful effects, while allowing time for her brain to heal. After 3 days on the cooling blanket they warmed Ella back up and during the warming process detected she was having seizures so mom and dad were still not allowed to hold her. On Day 5, mom and dad were finally able to hold their little girl right before she went to her first MRI. The MRI showed Ella had suffered a massive stroke and had very bad brain swelling on almost the entire left side of her brain. The doctors needed to remove a part of Ella’s skull to allow for the brain to swell without harming the right side of the brain; thankfully the surgery was successful. Ella has been resting and stable for the last 2 weeks, has had 2 more MRI’s, and is finally starting to bottle and breast feed. Seizures have been stable and Ella has been weaned off 1 of her 3 seizure medications. Surgery is scheduled for this coming week to put the piece of her skull back into place. Ella has been working with occupational therapy to test her ability to use her muscles and limbs, and speech therapy to ensure she is able to use her tongue and throat muscles properly while she eats. Occupational and physical therapies will be something she will work on throughout her life. She will need MRI’s every couple of months for at least the first 2 years of life.
