Ella No Está / She’s Not There is a narrative short film (approx. 11 minutes) written by Ana Paula Teixeira (Divina Gracia, See Ya L8R) blending magical realism with contemporary themes. The story follows Luz, a DJ caught between the sensory overload of the underground rave scene and a demanding spiritual lineage embodied by the sharp-tongued specter of her ancestor, Titi Alma. The setting is Puerto Rico, primarily moving between the chaotic, intimate spaces of the rave/DJ booth and Luz's apartment, which houses her neglected spiritual altar.
Ella No Está is about the moment we stop running. It is about the connection of the bembé to the dance floor, and that the DJs, the beat-conductors, are in control of the energy exchange at these happenings.
This is an underrepresented story and subculture about Puerto Rico -- the music scene is blowing up internationally and this story preserves musical and spiritual practices. We are representing a space of euphoria in an uncertain time that our culture is facing gentrification and erasure.
We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of Cortadito Film Lab and Imagine8, who are sponsoring our camera and lighting equipment. Our amazing cast and crew such as critically acclaimed cinematographer Alex Ashe and our protagonist portrayed by Teresa Karolina. This partnership, combined with a soundtrack of entirely original music by Rodney Cortes and Mussa Medusa composed specifically for this film, allows us to focus our budget on the physical and digital artistry that will make this world feel alive.
