Hello! My name is Ella Fenton and in early 2023 I will be taking part in a scientific expedition to the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility with Jim McNeill and the Ice Warrior Project.
This is one of the most crucial expeditions of our time, as it will give us a clear insight into how we are affecting our planet as a global population from a new perspective and will be a true world first if we make our destination.
The expedition team will be made up of complete novices from all aspects of life, who are currently undergoing training alongside me in order to become competent enough in the polar regions to take part.
What Am I Going To Be Doing?:
Led by Jim McNeill and the Ice Warrior Project, I will be part of a team of 28 people skiing 800 miles over 80 days to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, whilst collecting vital on ice climate change data from the Arctic Ocean.
The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility is the furthest point from three points of land, or the centre of the Arctic Ocean, and is yet to be reached by man - this is truly the most significant point on earth which remains undiscovered.
We will be split into 4 teams of 7, each undertaking a 20 day portion of the expedition, and collecting crucial scientific data sets to highlight the effects of anthropogenic climate change on our world. This will involve counting polar bears, collecting weather data, pollution (such as Teflon and plastic) measurements and measuring sea ice thickness for the NASA funded National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC).
I have completed all stages of my UK based training (have a look at some pictures below!), and will be heading to Svalbard in 2022 to begin my polar competency training. This will take one month to complete, and will be made up of training, scenario based tasks and a week long training expedition through Svalbard - this is why I need your help to raise funding in order to take part in the expedition and training!
