HELP ELIYA GET ON HIS FEET FINANCIALLY

Eliya is a recent LEGAL immigrant to the U.S. and came to Syracuse about six months ago with his 64-year-old mother, just the two of them.  They were both refugees from the war-torn country of The Congo.  They had lived in a tent in a refugee camp for over 20 years before they “hit the lottery” and were selected to be able to come to Central New York.  

I’ve worked with Eliya for the past four months.  In that time, he’s been one of the HARDEST WORKING and nicest young men...one who’s been trying to learn English and adjust to his new surroundings. 

This past Monday night (11-14), Eliya invited a new acquaintance into his home—another refugee who’d just moved in around the corner.  They had not known each other previously.  Food was shared and hospitality was extended.  After briefly stepping out, Eliya returned to find his mother brutally murdered.  The guest has been arrested in connection with the crime.

This was not at all what Eliya and his mom dreamed of when they thought about coming to America.  He was just beginning to get his bearings when this tragedy occurred.
