My name is Kristin Avina, and I am the School Counselor for 6th-8th grade at Truesdell Education Campus in Washington, DC. I am raising money to partially cover food expenses for Elite Scholars to participate in a week-long field trip opportunity.
What are Elite Scholars? Each term, Elite Scholars must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to be part of a program that was initiated three years ago to recognize academic achievements. This program is not just about grades though, it is about character. Elite Scholars are leaders at school and model schoolwide expectations.
Thoughout this school year, Elite Scholars have worked closely with a National Park Service Ranger on a project focusing on the Civil Rights Movement. The original plan was to have the project featured on their website, but recenly it turned into much more!
Elite Scholars were invited on a week-long experience visiting different historial sites related to the Civil Rights Movement across the Southeastern United States. Stops wil be made in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee before making our way back to Washington, DC.
The lodging and tranportation expenses have been graciously covered through a grant obtained by the National Park Service, but the cost of meals are the responsibility of the families. Since Truesdell Education Campus is a Title 1 school with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch, the food expense associated with the trip will be a financial burden for the majority of families.
This trip is an amazing opportunity for these students to actually visit the places they would usually only read about in a history textbook. I am asking for your support to help finance this trip for our students so that the financial burden does not prevent anyone from being able to attend. Your support is greatly appreciated!
