How many times have you passed someone on the street in your daily life and they've held a sign saying "Seeking Human Kindness" or "Please smile".
Currently in the District of Columbia, we have on average over 11,000 individuals who do not have permanent shelters. Last Sunday, I was helping with shelter upkeep at Central Union Mission. This one location houses 150 individuals a night in their dormitories. Salvation Army's Grate Patrol every night feeds on average about 100-200 people dinner throughout the district. Services like these aren't solely housing and meals. The more we support these efforts, the more organizations like these are able to support mental health, legal, medical and social services to individuals looking to get back on their feet.
As part of my efforts with #SeekingKindness, I will sit with someone new everyday. If I am able to reach my goal of $4,000, a portion of my proceeds as well as 100 community service hours will contribute to helping our most needed populations in D.C.
About Elite Miss District of Columbia – Amanda Silva
When serving in the Peace Corps, Amanda created a “bucket list”. One of her personal goals was to push herself out of her comfort zone and participate in a pageant. Having researched various pageant systems, she found that the Miss Earth system was closely aligned with her own values. Three years in the making, she finally joined a regional pageant and won the title of Elite Miss District of Columbia for 2017. As a leader in several community based organizations such as Rotaract Club of Washington, DC; Delta Phi Epsilon Society for Business and Foreign Affairs; Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and others – Amanda looks forward to utilizing her skills and networks to advocate on behalf of issues that affect the greater Washington metro area.
