Elinor's Marathon des Sables fundraiser

TRIGGER WARNING: This page discusses domestic abuse

I'm heading to the Sahara desert this April to take part in the Marathon des Sables . I'm using this as an opportunity to raise funds for a local charity that has a cause very close to my heart - The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's shelter.

The event
The Marathon des Sables (MDS) is a renowned and challenging ultramarathon that takes place annually in the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Known as one of the toughest foot races on Earth, the event covers a distance of approximately 250 kms (156 miles) over six stages, spanning seven days. Participants face extreme conditions, including scorching daytime temperatures that can exceed 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) and chilly nights.

MDS has gained a reputation as an ultimate test of endurance, pushing participants to their limits both physically and mentally.

After hearing about this event from a colleague, I couldn’t get it out of my head and so long story short… I signed up to participate in the 2024 race.

Here's a video to help you get an idea of what I'm in for...

For the last 6 months I’ve been ramping up my training, including doing the 65km Bondi to Manly walk a few times, running, hiking through the Aussie bush (and almost stepping on a brown snake!), doing strength training… and all kinds of other things to get my body ready for this crazy adventure.

The charity
I’m going to use this event as an opportunity to raise money for a charity with a cause that means a lot to me. I’ve chosen the Women’s Hornsby Ku-ring-gai shelter because I’ve been in some pretty terrible situations in the past and have needed this kind of support.

This women’s shelter, like many others, provides support for women and children experiencing domestic abuse and homelessness through crisis accommodation and outreach services in the community.

I know first-hand how devastating domestic abuse can be and how hard it can be to get back up after repeatedly being knocked down. I’d like to be able to give back after benefiting from some of these services in the past.

My goal is to raise $2,000 AUD, my work will then generously match the donations.

Where does your dollar go?
  • $20 helps a woman access education
  • $45 keeps our Shelter pantry and fridge full of healthy food
  • $70 provides a woman caseworker support at court
  • $99 provides a woman in crisis housing for the night
  • $100 gives a woman access to a caseworker

If you can donate even just a dollar, I’d be so grateful. Alternatively please feel free to share this page with others.

Thank you so much for reading!
