My husband Elijah had a lump at the corner of his eye for several months. Two different doctors said it was nothing to worry about, but it was.
The tumor grew through the structure of his left eye. He had a surgical biopsy on August 8th and was officially diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on August 15th.
His left eye is being removed on September 6th in Sacramento. They will also be taking muscle and skin from his thigh to use in the reconstruction.
After he fully recovers he'll need two months of radiation. Then several months to recover from the radiation.
The surgeons are saying he will be out of work for 6 months. He will still get paid through disability but at only 70% of his income. After 6 months it goes below 50%.
It's unlikely he will be able to return to the job he's been doing for 30 years. This means there are a lot of unknowns and fears over financial insecurity. We all know stress isn't conducive to healing.
Elijah and I are both givers and have a hard time asking for help, but we understand how difficult this situation is going to be on our family, so we welcome help. Every dollar adds up.
Thanks so much for supporting us through this cancer journey.
