Who is Elias?
Elias is a13 year old boy in 7th grade. He moved from White Salmon, Washington to Wasilla, Alaska, when he was 8 years old. He’s a good student and receives good grades with A’s and B’s. Elias is a big kid with a huge heart! He’s caring, respectful, helpful, hardworking, funny, and so much more. Elias LOVES basketball!!! It’s a huge part of his life. He plays year-round on a competitive team, and in the fall for his middle school. He also really enjoys participating in Native Youth Olympics (NYO), football and baseball. Elias also enjoys riding 4-wheelers, snow machines, setting net camp to catch salmon, and playing video games.
How did we get here?
When Elias was 6 years old he broke his foot, and then again, when he was 9 years old. Since breaking his foot it continually bothered him, but in the last few months, it became extremely painful. Elias was brought to a Foot and Ankle Specialist where he was given X-Rays, MRI & CT scans, and ultimately, surgery. During the surgery, the doctor found an abnormality. The abnormality was sent to pathology and came back with unexpected news. Elias has an extremely rare cancer; Monophasic Synovial Sarcoma. Only 1-3 per 1,000,000 get this type of cancer.
Treatment:
Since the initial diagnosis, Elias’s entire body has been scanned to check for other cancerous spots. The good news we recently received is the cancer is contained to his foot. Elias’s treatment plan starts with surgery, however, we will not know until after surgery if he is going to need radiation and/or chemotherapy. Since there are no Orthopedic Oncologist in Alaska, we must travel to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. They have a team of specialists, and surgery is scheduled for February 4th, 2021.
More than ever we have been grateful and appreciative of the love and support we have received from our family and friends. Due to the need to fly to Portland, Oregon, for Elias’s surgery, Jason (Elias’s father) has temporarily left his job to accompany Elias and Kylea (Elias’s mom) on the trip. At this time, the doctors are unsure how long Elias’s recovery will be, as well as all it will entail. No one is ever prepared, mentally or financially, for the news their child has cancer and is going to need extensive medical attention. We are asking for some additional financial support to help with Elias’s medical expenses. We are forever grateful for the help you have been so kind to provide during this time.
Sincerely,
Jason, Kylea, and Elias Herman
