Hello World,
Unfortunately, despite achieving my most successful season to date (individual world rank: 53, team status - currently qualified), Team Canada has cut my funding leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (they claim I, at 27, am too old to receive funding). I have been given this information just weeks before the first scheduled World Cup for the qualifying season, with little time to raise funds for travel and competition costs (which, when coupled with mandatory training camps abroad, allow me to only work 2/4 weeks per month). Given the current qualification status of the team (we are presently qualified, with four more key team events to go), it would be a tragedy to watch both myself and Team Canada miss our respective chances of Olympic glory due to financial limitations.
For this reason, I ask that you: my friends, family, fans, and strangers, to help me continue to pursue my Olympic dream. I really hate to ask this, but I was really relying on this funding and once again, Team Canada has made it inexplicably difficult to pursue my dream. I come to you in my time of need.
About me:
I have been fencing for the past 17 years, having trained in Los Angeles, New York, Durham [U.K.], and, most recently, Vancouver - where I now reside. This year I have fully committed myself to my craft, choosing to coach and train with Canada's next generation of athletes; even starting a YouTube channel with my brother to share our knowledge of the sport with all who will listen. By supporting this campaign, you will not only help an individual pursue his Olympic dream, but also will help Canada finally qualify a men's foil fencing squad.
Funding Goals:
There are 5 World Cup competitions remaining, three Grand Prix events, as well as two mandatory training camps I must attend in order to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. Each event costs approximately $2000 (Canadian), given the transportation costs, living expenses, and entry fees. With your help, I will raise the full $20,000 needed for the 10 events, and give back to the fencing community in the form of instructional videos on my YouTube channel.
For those who contribute and/or spread the word, I cannot thank you enough! Please let me know if there is any way I can help you pursue your dream, using my skill set as a coach, graphic designer, clothing designer, professional network, or anything else!
Thank you all.
Sincerely,
Eli Schenkel
