Elginite struck by APD officer

Donation protected
On March 27, 2025, Freddy De La Torre, was riding his bicycle in downtown Austin with a group. An Austin Police officer quickly pulled his patrol unit out of a driveway nearby without headlights on. The APD officer struck Freddy with his patrol unit and Freddy was ejected across the front of his bicycle. Another young child who was riding with the group was also struck. Freddy sustained seriously bodily injury and was transported to Seton hospital and was immediately taken into surgery.

Freddy sustained two broken hands, left broken hand, wrist and arm. His knee is possibly shattered with laceration to the muscle. Doctors have advised Freddy will need multiple surgeries in the upcoming days and weeks. Freddy is a mechanic and requires his hands for work. Freddy will be out of work for months up-to a year or longer.

Freddys wife Vanessa De La Torre, will be the primary caretaker for Freddy and also the only income source for the family.

Vanessa and Freddy have three children, one of which is special needs (Down Syndrome). The short term need is to help provide Vanessa assistance while she cares for Freddy and her children. Anything helps as it will be a long road to recovery for Freddy and Vanessa as they navigate their new normal.
