Juniors at Casco Bay High School want to tell the real stories of immigrants in their city, Portland, Me.
Every two years, I run a documentary interview storytelling project with our entire junior class, and this year, we have decided to focus the project on telling stories of immigrants and those of immigrant families in the Portland area. We want to counter the hateful narratives and shine a spotlight on the real, inspiring stories of sacrifice, courage, and resilience--and more.
In the end, after teams of students have conducted interviews, they will turn the narratives and transcripts into live storytelling performances and we will host a show in May. Our hope is to honor these people, elevate their voices, and reveal their stories. In the past, the final event has been quite moving for everyone involved.
In order to run the project, I work with two amazing local performance artists who spend a lot of time in my classroom and with my students. They teach script writing and run classes on performance technique. In the past, I have raised funds through our Parent Adivsory Group and the Foundation for Portland Public Schools. Both are giving some this year, but funds are tight as the need is so high right now. So I am hoping to raise $3,000 here.
I appreciate your help--and please, no pressure!
Times are tight for everyone, so only give if or what you can, and small amounts add up.
Thank you so much!
