Electricity for English School in Haiti

“We believe that we can reduce poverty in this country through teaching English” -Mackendy Lazard, Director/Teacher of Simple English School

Friends! My dear friend Mackendy lives in Miragoane, Haiti and recently moved his small, self-funded English school (Simple English School: SES) to a new building, where they have been running a gas generator to provide electricity. He personally reached out to me and asked if I could help at all with the $2,000 needed to get them proper electricity and I thought I’d share with you in hopes that he won’t have to take another personal loan out to complete this final step for the construction of the school.

MEET MACKENDY:

I have taught at the school several times as a guest teacher, and can personally say that Mackendy is one of the best English teachers I’ve ever seen. He has 1000% passion and has created an incredible space for local Haitians to learn English, empowering them to learn more about the outside world, provide an outlet for personal fulfillment, and create a strong sense of community. For many of the students this is their THIRD language behind Haitian Creole and French. It is also the absolute highlight of their weeks to go to SES classes, some of them traveling for an hour round trip to get there. They currently have around 200 students enrolled!

Over the last six years I have developed very close friendships with several of the students, who have been inspired by Mackendy and SES to start their own English study groups. They frequently message me for advice and input on how to improve the lessons for their students.

ABOUT SES:

Helping an entire community such as Simple English School is one of the best ways you can contribute to helping Haitians in need right now of hope and tools to give them a voice. Please, if you would like to contribute but still have questions, email me.

An important part of fundraising is asking directly what the needs are from the community you want to support. Let’s help Mackendy and his students get electricity so that they can turn on lights, fans and watch videos for the purposes of empowering their students as they learn English.
