We at Toastie Toez LLC are raising money for our friend LJ, who is in need of help paying for medical equipment that will enrich her life and create the better mobility she needs.
Lj has several chronic illnesses including a rare form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (type VI—kyphoscoliosis type), tethered spinal cord, autonomic dysfunction, and an autoimmune neuropathy. These disorders cause joint instability, multiple daily dislocations, sudden drops in blood pressure, sudden spikes in heart rate, extreme fatigue, and a lot of pain. She has tetraplegia which means her limbs are weaker than they should be. Her right side is affected more than her left and she has bilateral foot-drop. LJ also struggles with significant osteoarthritis in her spine, knees and shoulders. Her spine causes the most amount of pain and is unstable due to hypermobility which makes walking distances and carrying things very difficult.
After struggling in her current field of education became too much physically, LJ had to make the difficult decision to return to school to pursue a career change. She is working towards her bachelors degree in microbiology.
This change was a hard decision for her to make because she had to come to terms with the reality that her body would not be able to handle an active job like nursing or continuing to teach PE due to the degenerative nature of her illnesses.
LJ is in need of an electric scooter/chair and adaptive hearing and learning devices that are not covered by her insurance, to help with navigating a hilly campus and an Oticon Streamer for her hearing aids to allow better access to the audio for the parts of classes that are held virtually.
The power scooter/chair will help her navigate the college campus safely by reducing falls, increasing stamina, and reducing pain by reducing the number of dislocations she faces on a daily basis. The streamer will allow her to better participate in the online portions of her classes. During school she uses an FM system that the teacher wears which feeds the teachers voice directly into her hearing aids reducing the amount of background noise.
Unfortunately, the FM is not compatible with online courses/content. Since the pandemic started, courses have started doing a lot of online content and she is struggling to understand the audio portions of that content. Hearing aids do not work with headphones. The streamer will allow her to directly connect her hearing aids to her computer so she can have the needed amplification for better understanding.
We ask that you help us raise the money needed to help her achieve her goal. LJ has given so much of her time, caring and support as a volunteer within the community, and now it’s time for the community to help her.
