Eleanor is a beautiful 15-month-old child of Molly and Nathan Krebel who also happens to have Down Syndrome. Her personality is infectious as she is so expressive, sweet, and a total cuddle-bug.
When Eleanor was born, she was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Transient Myleoproliferative Disorder (TMD.) About 2-3% of children with Down Syndrome (DS) develop leukemia as a child. With the TMD diagnosis, the odds increased to 10-20%. The doctors have monitored her closely since birth and around March her blood work started looking a little worrisome. Lab work became more frequent and, finally, on August 18, 2020, they saw cells that were newly visible, which warranted an urgent bone marrow biopsy which she two days later. Things started moving fast and on Friday she was given the preliminary diagnosis of AMKL with final confirmation to finalize treatment options pending.
Typically, treatment for AMKL consists of six rounds of chemotherapy - all inpatient - over six months - at a minimum. We are hoping that one set of treatment is all she will need. The bright side to this type of leukemia is that children with Down Syndrome tend to do fairly well with treatment and are given about a 90% survival rate! They believe the extra chromosome that they have been gifted is a secret weapon! She can do this! We can do this!
Molly and Nate continue to champion for each of their kids. Annalee, nearly 6-years-old, was born with Mowat-Wilson Syndrome. Typical Henry is an active and adorable 2 ½ year old, and, of course, Eleanor. They need a break and need an easy way to share updates on this new journey.
We will be holding a few fundraisers to help them financially, accepting donations, and selling t-shirts and masks to help them through yet another hurdle. We believe all of this is possible because Eleanor (and the Krebel family) have one heck of a village pulling for them…thus the name, Eleanor’s Village. Blessings to all of you.
Please continue to send positive vibes to Eleanor and her whole family. Eleanor’s Village rocks!
