Eleanor Powell is the most loving, giving, and caring person a lot of us has ever had the opportunity of knowing in our life. She has always opened her home to anyone in need and has been a mother of sorts and a teacher to so many throughout her life. She has cared for anyone and everyone she’s come in contact with in some way and has left a lasting impression on so many of us.
A few weeks ago she took a really bad fall and broke two ribs. She has been in the TICU at Lakeland Regional Medical Center since then and has been fighting with all that she has to recover. Unfortunately this type of injury in an 86 year old has a 20% chance of survival. She has had a breathing tube and feeding tube placed to help her lungs, she has developed a blood clot in her left leg, lesions have been discovered on her bones, and her heart, as strong as she is, has been having a very hard time keeping up with all of the healing that her body needs to go through. She has been fighting with all that she has but it has been a very hard and painful road.
Her prognosis at this point is terminal. Eleanor, although on high doses of pain medication, has remained alert and responsive to her son Dale, all of her many loved ones and visitors, and she is very aware of this terminal prognosis.
Eleanor has made the extremely difficult decision to have her breathing and feeding tubes removed Monday. She will then be moved to hospice where she will be made as comfortable as possible until her body just can’t fight anymore.
Eleanor has given us all so much and now she needs us to give a little back. She has paid on her life insurance for the past 35 years; however, last year she was required to pay a large sum in order to keep her policy. Being on a minimal fixed income it was not possible for her to make the payment and the policy was void.
Unfortunately her remaining family is not financially equipped to cover all of her end of life expenses so they are reaching out to all of those that she’s touched in her life for help. Her wishes are to be buried in her plot next to her husband Jim and we want to do everything we possibly can to make that happen.
Any little bit will help and we thank you with all of our heats.
