In Loving Memory of Chelsea Redeker Milbourne

Chelsea was an inspiring presence to all who knew her. We are all heart-broken by her sudden passing resulting from a pulmonary embolism on Monday, October 19th, 2020. She is predeceased by her brother Nick and survived by her husband, Jeff and 3 year old daughter, Eleanor, and her parents Charles and Elizabeth Redeker.

Born on September 22, 1981in Fairfield, California, Chelsea spent much of her young life traveling the world with her parents, eventually settling in North Carolina, she graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her doctoral work in English examined the intersections between the sciences and the humanities, and she began her academic career in the English Department at California Polytechnic State University in 2014. She earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in September of 2020.

Chelsea was an award-winning scholar and an outstanding teacher. Hired to revive and direct the Technical and Professional Communication Program, she created new and innovative courses that helped humanities students better understand the importance of creativity, narrative, and ethics in the world of science and technology. Her commitment to her scholarship and to her students was exemplary and inspiring.

Chelsea lived life to its fullest. She was always thinking of ways to make the world a better place, asking what more she could and should be doing to reach this goal. She would quietly encourage those around her, be they friends, family, or students, to believe in themselves and to strive to achieve goals they did not think were possible.

Chelsea had a creative mind and was always the student, developing hobbies as a painter, photographer, and knitter. She enjoyed making, experimenting, getting her hands dirty, as much as she enjoyed reading and studying the world around her. And, she believed in the power of language and in its ability to reflect and shape experience.

Most of all, she loved to spend time with her best friend/husband Jeff and their daughter, Eleanor. Whether it was celebrating the coming of the weekend, a new milestone that Eleanor achieved, or a great book, Chelsea and Jeff were as close as a couple can be.

Chelsea dedicated her life to education. Through her research and teaching, she committed herself to the creation and circulation of knowledge. She had already begun sharing this knowledge with Eleanor, especially through reading books with her. We want to ensure that Eleanor has access to the education Chelsea loved, and the funds donated here will be used to assist Eleanor and Jeff with their journey ahead.

Chelsea also loved the idea of community and of bringing people together. In her loving memory, we will soon create a fund to support a project at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, where Chelsea and Jeff began their adventure together. The project, an outdoor structure, will create a space that students can use to create their own sense of community.  Stay tuned for more information about it.
