Greetings:
My four sons and I are planning a trip up to Huntington, Indiana to take care of some long overdue home repair issues for my disabled father. He has attempted to work with local contractors, but apparently over the years he is yet to find any that actually will do good work AND the few he has found seem to be charging fees that he simply cannot handle and even to me sound way tooooooo high.
He is now 73 - wow! He has cataracts, two bad knees, and has lost over 3" of height over the past several years due to deterioration of the cartilage in his spine.
The trip will occur just as soon as we finish making preparation plans; the rain seems to only intermittently stop in Indiana. But we need to get this done here in August or very early September as the rains increase as time goes on towards winter.
He and his wife, Shirley [my step-mom], have a sagging in roof which is also leaking and also several ceilings areas that need to be replaced. In addition, they have not had hot water in about 18+ months due to plumbing issues which he only recently mentioned to me.
In about three months, he is scheduled for a replacement knee surgery process so he will be limited to only the lower floor of the two story house where I grew up in.
My sons [18, 15; 13 7] plan to do the following:
- redo much of the sagging rafters in the roof/attic area
- remove old shingle roof and rotten wood [1x4's] and any gunk
- add new rafters to straighten out sagging roof areas
- add additional attic supports needed to handle some original design issues
- re-deck the roof with 5/8 OSB
- lay down a synthetic roofing underlayment
- install a CF metal roof from Mueller Steel [we will be hauling the materials up to Indiana]
- pull down bad ceiling areas and install new sheetrock, tape and bed, and most likely plaster the ceilings with our air powered plaster splatter tool
- install some new PEX plumbing as the current plumbing has been broken due to freezing issues
- install new water heater for some seriously needed hot water
- redo his upstairs bathroom floor as it has rotted out over the years from leaky roof
- install a new toilet and sink downstairs so when he cannot climb the stairs after knee surgery he can "survive"
- and of course load up all the roof debris and haul to his local dump area
- then we plan to come home.
To accomplish all this for Dad and Shirley we will be hauling all of our tools from Texas up to Indiana.
- ear plugs, safety glasses, knee pads
- 4 roof harness kits for me and the boys on the roof [Avery won't be up there]
- drills, bits, batteries, battery chargers
- air compressor for plaster splattering, and other air tools, clean off OSB from cutting dust, etc.
- levels, plumbs, strings, staples, PEX tools, saws, power saw, metal snips, miter saw, nail guns, rivet tools, belt pouches, brooms, pry bars, flat shovels, shop vac, OSB decking clips, painters plastic, painters tape,
- extension ladder
- ladder to get into attic
- and extra tools to hopefully handle surprises.
We need some financial assistance to get this project done. I don't like asking for much, but in this case, we really need some assistance to accomplish this for my Dad and Shirley. Our estimated total cost of supplies is approximately $5,000.
