ELDERLY DOG ABANDONED IN CENTRAL PARK NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Christine Walsh, and about a week ago, I became the human mom to a beautiful, elderly, and fragile dog who was discarded like garbage in Central Park.

I’ve named her Lady.

A Community Came Together
First, I want to thank everyone on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and the incredible Central Park dog families who stepped up with compassion, resources, and support. Your kindness has been overwhelming — thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Miracle after miracle continues to unfold in Lady’s story. Just five minutes after I agreed to take her home, Rashmita (Rashi) Redkar, another Central Park dog mom, came over, saw what was happening, and offered her support. We exchanged numbers. An hour later, she texted me and insisted on paying half the medical costs. I was stunned. Rashi has been a rock and a blessing to both me and Lady.

Lady’s Condition
When I brought Lady home and took her to the vet, we discovered she has multiple, serious medical issues. As anyone with pets knows, veterinary care can be as expensive as human medicine — and the costs are spiraling.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:
  • Lady is approximately 15+ years old.
  • She has a microchip from Colorado (2010), but it was never registered, so the original owners can’t be found.
  • She was initially overmedicated — heavily sedated and placed on high-dose narcotic painkillers — which left her in a stupor. The treatment plan was inadequate and caused more distress than relief.

Initial Vet Findings:
  • Possible dementia
  • Severe arthritis in the hind legs
  • Hearing loss (though her ears are clean)
  • Probable lymphoma (likely benign, though there's a hard spot that raised concern)
  • Possible neurological issue (uneven pupil size, possibly age-related)
  • Severely damaged teeth — too far gone for brushing or repair

Tests Performed:
  • Full blood panel/CBC
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Bordetella vaccination
  • Distemper/Parvo titer test
  • Accuplex 4 (tests for heartworm, Lyme disease, and other conditions)

Emergency Care at Animal Medical Center
After returning from the first vet, Lady spiked a 105-degree fever and became dangerously lethargic. In a panic, I rushed her to the Animal Medical Center (AMC). The amazing doctors there responded immediately.

Lady is now resting comfortably at AMC. The vets believe she may have suffered a stroke, likely brought on by age, stress, and improper initial treatment. Despite everything, she is fighting.

Why I’m Asking for Help
Some of my friends think I’m either crazy or a heroine for bringing Lady home that day. But the truth is, I couldn’t turn away when I saw her trembling and terrified in the park. She needed someone — and I was there.

So far, medical expenses are nearing $13,000. And there will be more.

I know times are hard, but if you’re able to contribute anything, it will go directly toward covering Lady’s vet care. Every donation helps. Even just sharing this campaign can make a difference.

Budget Breakdown (to date)
Here’s a transparent breakdown of what Lady’s medical care has cost so far and what we anticipate:

Service/Item Cost (Approx.)
Initial vet exam & diagnostics $750
Blood panel, titer testing, Accuplex $400
Vaccinations (rabies, bordetella, etc.) $250
Neurological and imaging diagnostics $1,200
Medications and pain management $600
Ongoing monitoring and follow-up visits $1,500
Emergency AMC visit for estimate only (fever, stroke eval) $8,479.33
Estimated Total So Far $12,819.33

Progress Updates
July 20: Lady is currently stable at AMC. She’s alert, eating again, and beginning to regain her balance. The fever is under control, and we’re seeing signs of resilience. She's a fighter.

Coming Up: Once she’s discharged, she’ll need:
  • Continued care from a neurologist and geriatric vet
  • Long-term arthritis management
  • Reassessment of her heart and potential lymphoma
  • Special diet and in-home comfort adjustments

I’ll continue updating this page with Lady’s progress, photos, and any major changes in her condition or medical needs.

Thank You
Thank you for reading Lady’s story. Thank you for your friendship, kindness, and generosity. Lady is a gentle soul who didn’t deserve to be abandoned. I’m doing all I can to give her safety, love, and dignity in her twilight years.

With heartfelt gratitude, Christine Walsh and Rashi Redkar
