My Mother with Traumatic Brain Injury Needs Help
Donation protected
My mother, Thurza Fayle, suffers from traumatic brain injury, TBI. Her well being depends on the visitation of caretakers, twice daily. I have provided for my mother financially and otherwise since 2009. Due to a financial crisis, I am presently without any income and I am unable to pay the agency which provides her caretakers. My mom depends on this service and any disruption would put my mom’s safety and well being at risk. Thurza doesn’t need the full care of assisted living yet she cannot manage life without daily help.
I live almost 5,000 miles away and cannot take over her care. Mom’s needs surpassed us living together, with my being her full time caretaker, years ago and Mom would still need this service should I live closer. Moving Mom is not an option as the medical system on Maui is severely lacking and living expenses are even more expensive. Both of her parents passed away many years ago, as did her only sibling. I am all my mom has left.
Due to health issues, I must live in a warm climate and my mother enjoys where she lives; it took 2 years to find the facility where she resides. This is not your typical ‘middle aged person caring for their parent’ scenario. My mother has been disabled since I was 9 years of age. After miraculously surviving a motorcycle accident in 1984, Mom almost died again in August of 2009 which is what ultimately led to her living in the senior community where she currently resides. My mom became disabled when she was only 29 years of age, suffering TBI from being thrown off the back of a motorcycle due to a blown tire. She was revived after being pronounced dead and again defied all the odds by opening her eyes after laying comatose for over 2 months. Doctors warned us that Mom would be in a vegetative state for life but she went on to prove them wrong. After years of intensive rehabilitation she learned to talk, feed, dress and bathe herself and walk again - even hold a job! Thurza is beloved by all for her positive attitude, sense of humor, and endless love of animals. She is a survivor, a warrior, grateful to be alive, aware of her blessings and wants to maintain her limited independence for as long as possible; she earned it! SITUATION An angel donor pays for Mom’s residential bill but payment of daily caretakers is out of pocket. Aides administer Mom’s glaucoma eye drops and medications; she cannot do this herself. They help with meal prep and bathing reminders and escort Mom to appointments. Mom can’t go a single day without their help and supervision which is why I started this gofundme.
DISABILITY The list of long term effects from traumatic brain injury is long. Mom suffers severe short term memory loss as well as severe visual impairment which prevents her from being able to read and makes identifying objects difficult. Her depth perception is affected as are her reflexes. She can’t keep track of time so she doesn’t know the day of the week or what month it is. Mom has developed the beginnings of dementia and depends on me for everything from ordering her grocery delivery, to paying her bills and scheduling her appointments, to shopping for necessities, and so on.
Please consider donating to our cause and sharing our situation with as many people as possible across all platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I am setting a goal of $15,000 in order to pay her past due balance of $4,000 which accrued after the $4,835 was paid and provide the approximate $840 a month payment allowing me time to find a solution. I am presently researching traumatic brain injury funding and trying to sell anything I own of value.
I am happy to answer any questions as well as provide more information and documentation upon request.
BILLING/COST OF CARE The agency responsible for providing care these past 6 years canceled service once our past due bill reached $4,000. The new agency charges $210 a week plus an additional rate for any escorts to appointments.
I am my mom’s legal guardian so donations will be managed by me.
Thank you for your consideration during this unimaginable time,
