Elderly couple robbed by scammers - $30,000 lost

Hi, my name is Brian Gilstrap. I am the youngest son of Richard and Joyce Gilstrap. Today my father fell victim to the Geek Squad Scam, which targets elderly, susceptible people. My father received an email informing him of coming subscription charges. Though the charges were fraudulent, my father assumed it was an innocent mistake rather than a scam. He reached out to the 1-800 number in the email to dispute the charges. Once they had him on the phone, they were able to convince him that the problem had started on his computer. He allowed them to have remote access, under the illusion that they would fix the problem. Once on his computer, they were able to log into his back account and wire transfer money out. My parents also oversee the finances of my aunt who lives in an assisted living facility, whose bank accounts were attached to my parents' accounts. In total, the scammers stole $30,000, which is basically everything my parents and aunt had.

We're in the process with the bank to attempt to recover the lost funds, although, they advised us it is very unlikely any money will be recovered. My parents' mortgage and my aunt's rent are due in the next few weeks, along with other utilities and expenses. Of course my brothers and I are willing to help where we can, but with our own expenses, we cannot cover the full amount that is due. It breaks my heart to see my parents, who have worked so hard all their lives, have everything wiped out in the blink of an eye.

My brothers and I are reaching out to ask people to help meet their urgent, upcoming expenses, especially so my aunt is not displaced from her home.

We are setting our goal at $5000, as we feel that will help meet their immediate expenses.
