Elaina Rivera Leukemia

Donation protected
Hello friends and family,

We have created a CaringBridge site for Elaina as she was diagnosed with B-Cell ALL Leukemia on Saturday, February 24th, 2024.

On Friday, February 23rd, Elaina was taken to the ER after a week of elevated fevers, not eating, and being lethargic. After some initial tests, they found that her hemoglobin and platelets were extremely low. She was then taken by ambulance to the Children's Hospital (the Castle) in Sioux Falls later that evening.

The morning of Saturday, February 24th additional tests were run and they confirmed she has leukemia. Tomorrow, on Monday, February 26th, Elaina will undergo a bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy. She will receive a port and a lumbar puncture. During the process, Elaina will receive her first chemotherapy treatment. Elaina will remain at the Castle for at least 8 days. She will return once or twice a week for the next 1-3 months for treatments. She will then transition to likely weekly or bi-weekly treatments for up to 6-9 months. After the initial aggressive treatments, Elaina will transition to less frequent visits for the next 2 years. For the first 6-9 months it will be critical that guests remain limited as Elaina will have no immune system.

Thank you all for your support and we ask that you all keep Elaina and the family in your prayers.
