Many of you know that during the 1980's and early 90's I was committed to social justice documentary film production and produced a number of documentaries about the civil war and struggle for social justice in El Salvador.
I have hundreds of hours of analog video from this time. Historic material; from mass movement May Day protests, to raw footage from guerrilla controlled territory during the making of my film Maria's Story. I also have kept in storage all these years, documentaries from the production wing of the guerrilla movement the FMLN (El Salvador: The People Will Win) .
It is (past due) time that this material is transferred to digital format for stable preservation. I was fortunate to receive a grant from BAVC's Preservation Access Program. They are funding 50% of the cost of preserving 20 hours of the most crucial material.
I am asking you to help me match the other 50%. The funds will cover the actual digital transfer, hard drives for storage, and my travel to the Bay area to drop off the material.
This digital material will be made available to those that preserve and carry on the legacy of the El Salvador solidarity movement, to academic research institutions internationally, and archival efforts in El Salvador, like the Museo de la Palabra y el Imagen (MUPI).
I greatly appreciate whatever contribution you can make to preserve this important period in Salvadoran history, a seminal chapter in the international struggles for social justice. My goal is two raise $1500 and I hope to raise these funds in the next three weeks, so that I can do the digital transfers this summer. I appreciate you sharing this campaign with friends and colleagues.
