El Joe T. Hodo Show: Pilot Episode

It’s been about three months since we sent the last report from El Joe T. Hodo Show, and thanks to all of your support, there is lots of news to share about our grassroots comedy journalism project. First, some great news: To get our show back on television, we’re producing a 30 minute pilot, already partially funded by several of you, and we urgently need your help to finish it! You can help fund our team by giving a gift to this GoFundMe campaign or join our new and growing Patreon page.
Here’s what we’ve been doing since July:
- We are finally back in the field, writing political satire in collaboration with local political movements! Wearing face masks and using common sense social distancing, we are writing a script together with farmers and water activists from the indigenous community of Hueyapan, Morelos, on the slopes of the Popocatepetl volcano. The story, conceived during a series of site visits and proposed at town meetings, depicts the real-life local resistance to an unsustainable electric plant slated to suck up a huge portion of the water from the volcano’s watershed. Joe, of course, will try to talk some “sense” into the locals, who have the crazy idea that water is best used for food crops, drinking, and bathing…
- We’re now a comic book! Joe T. Hodo has a new monthly slot in El Chamuco, which for years has been the Mexican equivalent of MAD magazine. In our first installment, published in October, we tackled a frustrating political problem: There are an unsettling number of supporters of Mexican center-leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador who are supporting Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections. To parody the problem, Joe descends on Mexico in a giant brain-snatching robot, converting certain Mexican activists into zombies serving Trump’s crony capitalist agenda. In the second issue, due out just before the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday, we celebrate cross-border political cooperation by depicting a ghost army of binational anti-fascists returning to Earth to help the righteous Mexabot to defeat Joe. We’re so excited for this new, more fantastical chapter in our project’s history, and the modest financial payout is ploughed right back into the project, covering a small but an important percentage of our crew’s costs.
- Joe T. Hodo is now doing weekly live broadcasts from our new studio giving his skewed, satirical take on the week’s political topics in Mexico, and answering questions posted by fans.
- Day to day political satire: Our popular memes are back up and running, contributing written and visual commentary on topics ranging from the rising threat of right wing populism, to the recent detention of former top military officer Salvador Cienfuegos for participating in the very drug business that he was supposedly combatting while leading the disastrous “War on Drugs.”
- "Mines yes! Ruins no!" Our final piece for our 2019-2020 TV show, El Almohadazo, has been viewed nearly 4 million times throughout Latin America, and more importantly, is being used as a community organizing tool across the region. (You can watch an English translation here .)
- And finally…we’re diving head first into the production of the pilot for our new TV show! To regain the financial solvency that kept this project running before the pandemic hit, we’re making a gambit to take our people-centered political comedy back to the airwaves. To do that, we’re producing a 30-minute pilot featuring an elaborate hoax played on a Mexican right wing movement. It’s good stuff but it’s not cheap to make.
To continue this work, and to help us get through this important (and scary!) leap of faith to get Joe and the grassroots political comedy he represents back on the air, we need your help. We know these are tough times but we need to raise at least $1500 USD by this weekend (yes...this weekend...we have a show to shoot!) to keep our production on schedule and pay our crew, build our props, and other urgent production costs. Several of you have already contributed to our project this year, and we are extremely appreciative. On a personal note, I should also mention that I myself have carved out time from this project to work on another area of urgent importance: the 2020 U.S. elections. Mexico is home to about one million binational children born to Mexican parents in the U.S., who have subsequently returned to Mexico. Many of those children have now reached the age of 18. My former students and I have been registering new binational voters in Mexico and accompanying them as they navigate the complex overseas absentee voting system in order to give voice to their family and friends back in the U.S. by saying “no” to Trump. We’ve helped dozens of people to vote and built a collective of binational voters. It’s not directly related to “El Joe T. Hodo Show”, but as a binational person in Mexico, I want to let you know that I’m doing my part from here to rid the continent of Donald Trump, and I hope you’re doing what you can as well.

Han transcurrido aproximadamente tres meses desde la última vez que les he enviado un informe sobre lo que hemos estado haciendo en El Joe T. Hodo Show, y gracias a todo su apoyo, hay mucho que decir sobre nuestro proyecto de periodismo de comedia, así que permítanme que sin preámbulos les dé una gran noticia: Para regresar a la televisión, estamos produciendo un piloto de 30 minutos, ¡y necesitamos su ayuda para terminarlo! - ¡Finalmente volvimos al campo, escribiendo sátiras políticas en colaboración con movimientos políticos locales! Con barbijo y respetando el distanciamiento social, estamos escribiendo un guión con personas de la comunidad indígena de Hueyapan, Morelos, en las faldas del volcán Popocatépetl. La historia, construida en el transcurso de una serie de visitas y presentada en reuniones populares, retrata la resistencia local en la vida real contra una central eléctrica insostenible que se prevé que absorberá gran parte del agua de la cuenca del volcán. - Sátira política cotidiana: Nuestros populares memes están nuevamente en marcha, aportando críticas escritas y visuales sobre temas que van desde la creciente amenaza del populismo de derecha, hasta la reciente detención del ex militar de alto rango Salvador Cienfuegos por participar en el mismísimo negocio de las drogas que supuestamente combatía liderando la desastrosa "Guerra contra las Drogas".
- ¡Ahora somos un cómic! Joe T. Hodo tiene un nuevo espacio mensual en El Chamuco, que durante años ha sido el equivalente mexicano de la revista MAD. En nuestra primera entrega, publicada en octubre, abordamos un problema político frustrante: Existe un inquietante número de partidarios del presidente mexicano de centroizquierda Andrés Manuel López Obrador que están apoyando a Donald Trump en las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos. No parece tener sentido, pero ese es el mundo loco en el que vivimos. Para parodiar el problema, Joe desciende sobre México en un gigante robot usurpador de cuerpos, convirtiendo a activistas mexicanos de izquierda en zombis sin mente al servicio de la agenda capitalista de Trump. En el segundo número, que se publicará justo antes de la festividad del Día de Muertos en México, celebramos la cooperación política transfronteriza al representar un ejército de almas antifascistas binacionales que regresa a la Tierra para ayudar al honrado Mexabot a derrotar a Joe. Estamos muy entusiasmados con este nuevo capítulo en la historia de nuestro proyecto, y la modesta paga es reinvertida directamente en el proyecto, cubriendo un pequeño pero importante porcentaje de los costos de nuestro equipo.
- Actualmente Joe T. Hodo está haciendo transmisiones semanales en vivo desde nuestro nuevo estudio dando su visión sesgada y satírica sobre los temas políticos de la semana en México, y respondiendo preguntas publicadas por los fans.
- Y finalmente... ¡nos estamos sumergiendo de lleno en la producción del piloto de nuestro nuevo programa de televisión! Para recuperar la solvencia financiera que mantuvo este proyecto en funcionamiento antes de la pandemia, estamos haciendo una apuesta para llevar nuestra comedia política centrada en las personas de vuelta al aire. Para hacer eso, estamos produciendo un piloto de 30 minutos que presentará un elaborado engaño contra un movimiento de derecha mexicano. Es bueno, pero no es barato de hacer.
Para continuar con todo esto, y para ayudarnos a atravesar este importante (¡y aterrador!) acto de fe para que Joe y la comedia política popular que representa vuelvan al aire, necesitamos su ayuda.
