El Camino for Cudeca

Donation protected
With nothing better to do this summer, I've decided to walk 800km across Spain - or instead, shall we say I am going to walk 500 miles because, hey, it sounds more like that song and that makes it sound more fun. I’ll be walking from the small town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the south of France to Santiago de Compostela in the Galician northwest of Spain. However, this is not just any old walk; this is the world-renowned El Camino de Santiago - one of the most famous walks and pilgrimages in the world. I’ll be taking my first steps towards the Pyrenees on the 30th June (all being well).

Unlike many pilgrims who complete El Camino, I'm not a particularly religious or spiritual person and I'm not doing this venture in some quest to "find myself" or to trigger some sort of spiritual awakening, but, you never know, and we'll see what happens along the way. Mainly, I'm doing it because it sounded like a fun challenge and I’ve never really done anything like this in my life. Since this walk is not a religious or spiritual journey, I thought this was a good opportunity to do something worthwhile and meaningful to help others. I've lived in Marbella for three years now and the place has been good to me, so I wanted to give something back to the community and that is why I'm fundraising for Cudeca - a charity situated in the province of Málaga that helps provide palliative care services to cancer patients in the area. They do a lot of amazing work in the province helping support patients and families who have been affected by cancer. Plus, as my own mother went through palliative care back home in Wales a few years ago, it is a cause close to my heart too. So this pilgrimage is dedicated to the memory of my late mother Catherine Harrison too.

So, if you do think a Welshman walking 800km - or 500 miles - across the north of Spain is some sort of ‘feat’, please donate whatever you can to this worthy cause.
