After moving to Madrid with her dismissive husband Nacho, Sarah struggles to get her work accepted in an art gallery. Eight months pregnant, speaking no Spanish and feeling completely isolated, she feels hopeless - until the night she makes contact with ‘El Aquelarre’. The famous painting of a coven sacrificing their babies to the Devil triggers a tale of obsession, possession and liberation.

Tras mudarse a Madrid con su despectivo esposo Nacho, Sarah lucha para que su obra sea aceptada en una galería de arte. Embarazada de ocho meses, sin hablar español y sintiéndose completamente aislada, Sarah está desesperada - hasta la noche en que toma contacto con 'El Aquelarre'. El famoso cuadro de un aquelarre sacrificando sus bebés al Diablo desencadena una historia de obsesión, posesión y liberación.

Word from the Director

‘El Aquelarre’ was born from a lockdown horror writing challenge in March 2020. The 23-page first draft was a homage to Francisco de Goya and to the 18th-century masterpiece that gives name to this film. As a passionate aspiring screenwriter, I committed myself to recreating the unique and powerful feeling that I first had when I encountered the painting: that of pure captivation and safety in view of such a horrific but sublime image. As a fervent horror lover myself, I believe this genre has the particular power to turn the apparently evil supernatural into a safe alternative to the real evil in the natural world.

That is how Sarah, the bright woman leading our story, finds refuge in the spell of a medieval coven of witches that speaks to her through the image of ‘El Aquelarre.’ Surrounded by hostile men who show no appreciation of her worth, Sarah and her unborn child are offered hope by an ancient group of women who prayed to a more powerful yet less violent male figure: Lucifer. Likewise, the audience, Sarah jumps in terror and tries to run away from such a sinister force, only to then realise that the real evil lies beneath her abusive husband and her manipulative boss. In the end, both Sarah and the audience understand what Goya was able to capture with his art: nightmares become dreams when you stop fearing them.

‘El Aquelarre’ nació a raíz de un desafío de escritura de terror durante la cuarentena de marzo 2020. El primer borrador de 23 páginas fue un homenaje a Francisco de Goya y a la obra maestra del siglo XVIII que da nombre a esta película. Como un apasionado aspirante a guionista, me comprometí a recrear la particular y poderosa emoción que sentí al toparme por primera vez con el cuadro: pura fascinación y seguridad ante semejante imagen tan horrible pero sublime a la vez. Como ferviente amante del terror, considero que este género tiene la curiosa capacidad de convertir lo aparentemente malvado de lo sobrenatural en una alternativa segura al verdadero mal del mundo natural.

Así es como Sarah, la brillante protagonista de nuestra historia, encuentra refugio en el hechizo de un aquelarre medieval de brujas que le habla a través del cuadro de Goya. Rodeada por un ambiente hostil liderado por hombres que no aprecian su valor, Sarah y su nonato hijo reciben esperanza por parte de un antiguo grupo de mujeres que le rezaba a una figura masculina, más poderosa pero menos violenta: Lucifer. Al igual que la audiencia, Sarah huye aterrorizada por semejante fuerza tan siniestra, solo para luego reconocer que el verdadero mal se encuentra escondido en su esposo abusivo y su jefe manipulador. Al final, tanto Sarah como el público entienden lo que Goya supo plasmar a través de su arte: las pesadillas se convierten en sueños cuando dejas de temerlas.
