The Lewiston (Maine) Public Library is scrambling hard to deliver a broad range of services designed to meet the needs of Maine's second largest city. And the Friends of LPL is running just as fast trying to raise funds to support the Library in these efforts.
Major library services include: 1) Nurturing young readers by working with parents, grandparents and caregivers to support preschool and school-age literacy; 2) Connecting library members to the online world by helping to bridge the digital divide and providing access to premium online services like Mango Languages ; 3) Supporting our local refugee and immigrant community with integrating into American life through English language learning and job search assistance; 4) Serving as a community commons to bring people together through face-to-face programming.
However, the challenges are great in this age of diminishing municipal support and that's why the Friends of LPL are asking for your help. We're trying to raise the $13,000 necessary to replace the aging (1996-vintage) and stained furniture on the first floor of the Library. We're hoping to purchase new counter-height tables (complete with electrical outlets to power today's tech devices) that would run along our storefront windows on Lisbon Street.
By supporting this drive you will not only allow us to upgrade our furniture, you will allow the Friends of LPL to make use of its limited funds for other pressing library needs, like expanding book and ebook purchases and supporting all four of the major services outlined above.
The Friends of LPL is a member-based, IRS-recognized 501 c 3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
