My friend Christy Hazaga is an amazing daughter, mother to Parker, wife to Ron and friend to MANY. Christy and her family are truly amazing people. In the past 12 years they have endured more than one family should ever have to. Christy has been fighting a genetic and rare, malicious type of cancer, called Paraganglioma, for more than 7 years now. Paraganglioma is a result of a genetic mutation she received from her father who also suffered from the genetic cancer and later passed away from kidney failure. Christy’s older sister, Veronica,known affectionately to everyone as Ronnie, was diagnosed in February 2001 and passed away in May 2002 at the young age of 30, leaving behind her two treasured boys, Marcus and Kenny.
Christy has been receiving treatment at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. She has been through almost a dozen different surgeries, several radiation treatments, and chemotherapy so far to treat the cancer that matastasized into her stomach, liver, pancreas, she was even forced to get a hysterectomy. Unfortunately, all of these treatments have not been enough, and while her doctors have been doing a wonderful job trying to help her, they have run out of options here. But Christy and her family decided running out of options was NOT an option, especially for her amazing son, Parker, who loves his mom to the moon and back.
Fortunately, Christy has recently been lucky enough to be accepted into an experimental trial in Houston, Texas, at the Excel Diagnostics and Nuclear Oncology Center. It is a promising, novel treatment, and they are very hopeful that it will be successful for her; however, this treatment is very expensive especially because it is considered a TRIAL for RESEARCH and insurance will only cover up to 80% of costs leaving her and Ron to cover the remaining 20% out of pocket. In addition to the costs of the treatment itself which are in excess to 10,000 each treatment (there will be 4-8) plus the cost of medicines and scans that run THOUSANDS of dollars, there are also the significant travel expenses. The trial requires 4 separate trips to Texas, each lasting 1-2 weeks with 4 additional follow-up trips EIGHT trips minimum!! The costs of round trip flights, lodging, rental cars, etc., that go with the medical expenses are STAGGERING! It is going to be a serious financial burden on her family, and we would like Christy to focus on getting well, rather than financial stressors.
