I am writing a statement on a dangerous dog that attacked my nephew. (In my sisters words!)
On Sunday may 3,2020. Just before 4pm that afternoon. My sister, my 11 year old son Landon Daley, were in our fenced in backyard where we had been enjoying the day. My neighbour and his dog had just gone into their backyard. He called me over to fence where he had given me a bottle of wine.
As we stood there chatting my son Landon was playing with his foam bat and baseball. My neighbours dog “Demon”, Started to charge the fence (seemed he wanted ball). the neighbour told Demon several times to stop.
Landon picked his baseball up and was walking away , as Demon charged the fence and very quickly and forcefully pushed his way through the bottom of the chain link fence!
Landon threw the ball towards the fence to detour the very aggressive behaviour of this dog from getting any closer. The dog then lunges at my son, and grabbed hold of his right arm. The dog was shaking it’s head. Flinging my sons arm locked in its mouth. We were screaming , I ran immediately when I saw the dog approaching my son and just before I got to my son he put his hands in front of his face to block the dog as it jumped on him. The dog had already bit. I used the wine bottle I was holding to beat the dog over it’s head, as hard as I could yelling, as the dog tackled my son to the ground screaming and crying for his life!
The neighbour was running over. While my husband heard the commotion and came running. He proceeded to kick dog several times in the ribs/stomach.
The owner was screaming at Demon to stop.
When dog finally let go. It tried to circle back at my son and I. The neighbour pushed his dog back under fence, while my sister blocked herself with a chair, and my husband blocked my son and I.
As I pulled my sons blood soaked sleeve up, his forearm folded in half. And the bones were sticking out of the huge hole in his arm. I started screaming and my husband took him. We ran around to front yard, I went in grabbed my phone and a towel. I called for an ambulance while My husband wrapped our sons arm, and laid him on the ground and put his feet up, as instructed by 911 dispatch. The neighbours dog proceeded to get out of his yard/ house again and came around the front of my house where my 5 year old son and my dad with stage 4 cancer was standing , my sister saw the dog ready to lunge. Screamed and pushed them back into my house. While the neighbour yelled at Demon to go home. He wouldn’t even touch his own dog.It was Like he was afraid himself that his dog would then attack him.
My son was then rushed by ambulance to St. Catharines Hospital where he required a 4.5 hour emergency surgery. The dog severed Landons tendons, ligaments and nerves. Broke both bones in arm, and not only broke but crushed them. The surgeon had to remove fragments, and chips of bone from inside his arm. The dog missed by “a hair” both of his major arteries. Landon now has two steel rods running through both of his bones. And a full arm cast, shoulder to hand. My son will need a physiotherapist , my son and I have to go for counselling for mental and emotional trauma.
We don’t yet know if my son will have full use of his arm and/or hand. Being his dominant one too. My son is still not home from the hospital.
This dog is a danger to all of us. I have 4 children. My youngest is 21 months. We are afraid to be in our yard. My kids are afraid to go outside. Demon has gotten off his owners property many of times. On the road. In other neighbours yards.
Demon didn’t let go of my son. Beating him over the head, kicking it, owner yelling for him to stop. And the dog wouldn’t let go.
If he had nicked one of my sons arteries my son could’ve passed away in our arms. If the amazing surgeons weren’t able to successfully repair his bones , he could’ve lost his arm.
The dog shouldn’t be given a chance to do this again. Next time someone may lose their life as a result of its very aggressive behaviour and unwilling to listen to its owners commands.
As long as my neighbour is allowed to keep this animal, We have a loaded weapon next door, what happens if the trigger is pulled again? We got so very lucky that my baby is still here with us. Homes are supposed to be our safe place. We own our home. We just moved here last January. It’s not like we can just move. And we shouldn’t have too based on someone else’s dangerous animal. The covid -19 restricts us to our home and yard. And now we don’t even have our yard going into summer.
Please do whatever can be done to have this dog deemed dangerous and give it’s owner very strict rules to keep my children and others safe from it. Since the law can’t do anything, this is our only hope right now. Thank you.
