Hey,

ich bin Clara, 19 Jahre alt und mache aktuell einen Freiwilligendienst im Machame Hospital in Tansania. Das Krankenhaus liegt am Fuße des Kilimandscharos und bietet Betten für rund 160 PatientInnen. Die Geburtsstation ist, neben dem Orthopädischen Bereich, der größte Bereich des Krankenhauses. Tagtäglich erlebe ich hier Kaiserschnitte und natürliche Geburten - im Monat gibt es ca. 100. Um die medizinische Versorung dieser Neugeborenen zu verbessern, möchten wir einen "radiant warmer" anschaffen.

Für die Pflege der Babys ist es sehr wichtig ihre Körpertemperatur aufrechtzuerhalten, da dies ihnen noch sehr schwer fällt. Neugeborene müssen die Fähigkeit, Wärme effektiv zu erzeugen und zu halten, erst erlernen. Dabei kann ein "radiant warmer" helfen. Er strahlt Infrarotwärme aus, um eine konstante und sichere Umgebungstemperatur aufrechtzuerhalten und damit eine Unterkühlung des Neugeborenen zu verhindern und dessen Energieverbrauch zu minimieren. Besonders Frühchen sind darauf angewiesen, da die Unterkühlung hier zum Tod führen kann. Aktuell werden diese Frühchen in ein 28km entferntes, größeres Krankenhaus gebracht, wobei der Transport Risiken mit sich bringt. Ein solches Gerät kostet etwa 2950$ und kann deshalb nicht vom Krankenhaus finanziert werden. Jedoch ist es gerade hier, in Machame, wichtig die Körpertemperatur des Babys zu unterstützen. Denn das Krankenhaus liegt auf etwa 1500 Meter Höhe, wodurch es recht kalt ist.

Mithilfe eurer Unterstützung könnten wir die medizinische Versorgung aller Neugeborenen hier verbessern und ein solches Gerät anschaffen.

The maternity ward, along with the orthopedic department, is the largest section of the hospital. Every day, I witness cesarean sections and natural births here - there are approximately 100 per month. To improve the medical care of newborns, we would like to purchase a "radiant warmer."

It is very important for the care of babies to maintain their body temperature, as they still struggle with this. Newborns must learn the ability to effectively generate and maintain heat. A "radiant warmer" can help with this. It emits infrared heat to maintain a constant and safe ambient temperature, preventing hypothermia in the newborn and minimizing its energy consumption. Premature babies, in particular, depend on it, as hypothermia here can lead to death. Currently, these premature babies are being transported to a larger hospital 28 km away, which poses risks during the transportation. Such a device costs about $2950 and therefore cannot be financed by the hospital. However, it is particularly important here in Machame to support the baby's body temperature, as the hospital is located at about 1500 meters altitude, making it quite cold.
