Eidan Be Well

April 2015

Eidan Webster Bray, my smart, beautiful, sensitive, kind, witty, adventuresome, big-hearted, clever, adorable, and super awesome daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer in January of this year. She is a mechanical engineer with a wonderful wife, Michelle, 3 cats, and 2 dogs in her household. She has a big, wide world of social support from family and friends.

Treatment thus far for Eidan's brainstem glioma has consisted of proton radiation therapy for 6 weeks in Seattle along with a half dose of chemotherapy during that time. Now back at home in Portland, she begins full-dose chemotherapy next month after 4 weeks of rest and recovery from the radiation. Chemotherapy for this cancer is an oral medication taken for 5 days of every 28 days, and will continue for 6, 12, or 18 cycles, depending on Eidan's response and tolerance.

An integrative approach to brain cancer treatment seems to offer the best chance of survival for Eidan, and she is pursuing varied treatment options with evidence supporting their effectiveness along with the conventional treatments of radiation and chemotherapy. Eidan wants to live, to beat this cancer, and I am serving as her advocate and researcher toward this goal. I'm also her mom, and I'm devoted to this child of mine.

We've been told that there is no cure for this cancer, but that a remission is possible. I think it's just semantics, but we'll follow the convention and hope for a 70-year remission for Eidan's brain cancer. That will get her to 100. As for now, Eidan continues to live as normal a life as possible, spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors as she is able, maintaining a sense of humor, and bravely and gracefully approaching each step of this unchosen cancer journey that has become her life.

Funds will be put to use to support the expenses we have incurred and will continue to incur related to Eidan's treatment, including the travel costs associated with her treatment. This is a big undertaking for Eidan and her extended family, but we are committed to doing everything that can be done to make Eidan's health and long-term survival a reality. The world is a better place with Eidan in it. We are grateful for your support.
