Blake was hit by a car Monday, November 4th, while riding his bike home from school. He was hit while crossing the crosswalk by a lady who lives in the neighborhood. After she hit him, she proceeded to drag him under the car for 60 feet as she did not know she hit him. Thankfully, his bike got lodged under her car, which ultimately saved his life. The cops did absolutely nothing. The lady was not charged or ticketed for hitting Blake, which is absolutely insane to me.
Blake has some very serious injuries from the accident. He was taken to CRMC by ambulance, where they stabilized his legs, and then was taken by helicopter to Denver Children’s Hospital for further treatment and evaluation. We have been here since. While Blake got very lucky, he does have a long road of recovery ahead of him. His left leg is broken in three different places into about five pieces. His right foot was stuck under the lady's car tire and has a massive wound that goes down to the bone of his foot. Thankfully, his foot is not broken. Beyond that, he has road rash on a lot of his body, which are all minor compared to his leg and foot. He has undergone two surgeries to set his leg and clean out his wounds. They have placed a wound vac in his foot to help prevent infection and help with healing while we wait for surgery to close his foot. He will have at least one more surgery before we can go home, which we are being told will be Friday as long as they have an OR for him.
Since Blake cannot walk, we did get him a wheelchair, but he needs help with almost all his daily needs, so I have been out of work since this whole accident happened. Bret has been driving back and forth from Cheyenne to Denver taking care of girls the house and Blake and I. We really hate to ask for help, but being out of work while taking care of Blake has and will continue to hurt us financially we never in a million years anticipated something like this happening and while I am grateful my job is safe, it’s all unfortunately unpaid leave. We appreciate each and everyone who can or has helped us in any way while we get him back to normal and healthy.
Update:
First off I would just like to thank everyone who has supported us and Blake during this whole incident. Those that have came by to see Blake brought him gifts and things to do as well as donated money to help us is all very appreciated and we are so grateful for all the incredibly kind family members, friends, and strangers. Blake had his 3rd surgery Friday Nov 15th where they were able to remove his wound vac and close his foot and we are now home in Cheyenne so he can continue to heal. While he still has a long road ahead we are so happy to be home with our family and friends near by. He will have quite a few follow up appointments in the next coming weeks and we are hoping he will not need any other surgeries. Please continue to keep Blake in your thoughts and prayers.
Also not that we owe an explanation to anyone but due to the amount of comments online and now the poorly written news story that was posted I feel like I need to address some things. Blake was hit in the middle of the cross walk coming home from school riding his bike. After he was hit he was in fact drug 60 feet under the car down the road. The older women who hit him did not know she hit him and had to be told to stop and flagged down before she stopped. She told me with her own words she never seen him and did not know she hit him. We never claimed that she was speeding. We never claimed she was distracted or anything like that. We are simply stating that she hit him and did not know until told and that is what the whole issue is. From witnesses on the scene all say they don’t understand how this women did not know. They have told me the crash was so loud that it sounded like she hit another car. They have told me they truly thought Blake was gone due to the fact that she just kept going. Blake wouldn’t have most of the injuries he has if she just would have stopped when she first hit him. She was traveling at 20mph and never hit her brakes before hitting him. The Cheyenne police department did a horrible investigation. They did not get statements from key witnesses on the scene. They did not know Blake was drug down the roadway I as his mother informed them of this information over the phone the next day and asked for the investigation to be reopened and they still did nothing. My husband went to the scene to measure the marks in the roadway from my son’s bike that was dragged along with him to show just how far Blake was drug under this women’s car. The cops never investigated that and never said anything about it. The Cheyenne PD then came to the hospital and attempted to take a statement from my 8 year old son who was already clearly suffering, scared, and on a lot of pain medication before we asked them to leave. I personally told them to take the photos of him they needed and to go. These are the facts of the accident. There is simply nothing we are hiding. This is not fake or a scam this is real life and just because it wasn’t on the news or the police statements don’t say a certain thing does not mean that this isnt true and factual information. We have reported a claim to her insurance company. We do have medical insurance. Unfortunately insurance companies don’t settle claims in a timely manner especially when it comes to medical claims as they have to wait for medical records and bills before things can start to be paid. Our health insurance company will not pay anything until the women’s auto policy is exhausted and again all of this takes time. My work has approved a leave of absence but that is also unpaid. So none of the claims we have filed will account for time away from work and or his pain and suffering he has endured during this whole process. That is the whole purpose of this go fund me is to help us with our normal everyday life and bills as we help our son heal and get back to his normal routine. Again we appreciate all the kind people out there who genuinely care and that have been there for us. If anyone has questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me and I will do my best to respond.
