Medical Bills for Maggie's Cancer Treatment

This fundraiser benefits my dear friend Maggie who is a teacher and single mom to a 6 year old daughter. I've known Maggie for over 5 years and she's one of the best friends one can wish for. She's creative, reliable, funny, and always there to help. She's the most selfless person I know and would never ask anyone for help no matter how bad the situation.

In 2016, she had her last Pap smear which showed abnormality. She lost her insurance shortly after and therefore couldn't follow up with her doctors. After finally being able to get health insurance this year, Maggie was diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer during her annual visit with her gynecologist in April 2020. This diagnosis was backed up by several tests and biopsies, such as a colposcopy (the cervix is being stained with a harmless dye and then magnified, to locate abnormal cells) and a LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure to remove a sample from the cervix for biopsy). Shortly after, she needed to get a conization, during which an additional part of the cervix was removed to see how far the cancer has spread. Having many more follow up visits with her oncologist, bloodwork, and multiple scans, such as PET scans done, the medical bills are now piling up.

Maggie is currently waiting for the results of her PET scan to see if the cancer has spread to any other organs. Once the results come in, her doctor can finally schedule her for a radical hysterectomy (removal of uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, as well as nearby lymph nodes). Because the cancer is located in two parts of the cervix and is spreading quickly, the procedure needs to be scheduled within the next two weeks.

Since it's summer break, Maggie currently doesn't have an active income as a teacher and is unable to receive unemployment benefits. She is using her last bit of savings to feed her family and pay for medical bills. The bills for the surgery and further procedures ( quarterly follow ups and possible chemotherapy after surgery) would ruin her financially. The recovery after the surgery will take a minimum of 6 weeks, which means that she won't be able to go back to work immediately when school starts in the fall.

I'm asking everyone who's able to give (no matter how little) to please help my dear friend with a donation. Even if you can't give, please send a prayer and share this fundraiser with your friends, co-workers, and family.
I appreciate everyone's help so much. May God bless you!
