Reclaim, Rebuild Eg West is a Black youth led organization founded this year, that is disrupting the status quo on what it means to be in community and for the livelihoods and freedoms we believe Black people in this city should be able to enjoy. While we’re energized by the current support for the cultural preservation and celebration of this area, we think it’s important to highlight the residents that have already been displaced as a result of the failures of past and present governments to correct for the historical harms that have affected Afro-Caribbean communities.
Through our own reflections, we now feel it extremely important to highlight the need for increased support for the Black residents of this community that also makes Little Jamaica what it is. As of today we’ll be collecting funds to redistribute to the tenants of Little Jamaica to ensure the maintenance of its vibrancy.
Our organization is committed to providing support for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour who are tenants renting in parts of the city with historically large black populations, including Little Jamaica and the neighboring Weston Road Area, and we will be covering up to $800 of rent per applicant. As such, we need to raise as much funds as possible to try and cover as many rents for tenants in our communities as we can.
We have established an application process that asks tenants fundamental questions on their urgent needs during this time. This application will require one's name, address and preferred method of receiving the funds (through e-transfer or cash delivery). The money from this fund can be used toward rent, utilities, food or other basic life necessities.
