Effects of the Slater Fire on "Mountain Man" Dave
Donation protected
David, a member of my family, is an independent, resourceful person who appreciates the beauty of the Klamath National Forest. He owned the property at Happy Camp for 13 years and slowly made it into a fully functional residence. It was his sanctuary, a home deep in the woods, and a river just below the hillside where his home rested. On September 8th, after clearing falling tree litter and trying to put out small fires on the property using a water pump attached to water tanks, the Slater fire encroached. David knew he needed to get his kitten “Risky Roodle” and himself to safety. He climbed down the bank into the river. Partially submerged in icy waters, David clung to a rock and the cat carrier. He kept the cat wet to protect from flying embers. They stayed that way for nearly 2 hours. When they emerged from the river, his house was engulfed in flames.
The Indian creek watershed was completely incinerated, and it is the primary watershed in town that feeds the Klamath River. David’s home burned to the ground, and he has a meager few items in his truck and some clothing. Currently, he is staying at his work in the community services district, where he supports neighbors dealing with the outcome of their homes.
Our family jokingly calls my brother Mountain Man because he is skilled at a rugged lifestyle and doesn’t like to take from anyone. He did not have insurance. His home had rain barrels, solar panels, water tanks, and water lines, all items that prepare one for a life out of the city limits. He was prepared. He even knew what his escape plan would be if he even encountered a quick-moving fire. It just moved too hot and too quickly.
David wishes to rebuild. Additionally, he has pressing needs for clothing for upcoming inclement weather, a safe place to sleep, replacing necessary tools and items to rebuild his home. I am asking you to join me in giving what you can to support David Gordon in his time of need. I understand the strain of current events due to the pandemic as well as those affected by the wildfires, anything would help! Myself and my family thank you for your help!
