Effective Reparation- Give Directly
Birthday announcement!
Today I turn 24, and having always had my birthday close to Christmas I’ve decided to give all my gifts early. This year I’m not buying anyone any material possessions, instead I’ve made a donation of £16,000 (with a 25% Giftaid bump, alongside a £9000 match by an anonymous donor, resulting in a total of £29,000) to GiveDirectly on behalf of all my friends and loved ones.
GiveDirectly is a charity that works in Kenya and Uganda distributing cash transfers to the poorest of the poor, The average recipient lives on 52p a day, or just under £190 annually, I made the decision this year that I was deeply uncomfortable with the level of inequality in the globe and my own place in a world with so much imbalance, especially as I’ve learnt more about the historical reasons for this distribution, and I’ve committed to direct a significant proportion of my income in each year towards the absolute poor.
That being said, it’s my birthday, and hopefully some of you will want to give me a present too! Which is why between today and New years day, throughout the period of the Christmas season, I’m starting a fundraiser for those who wish to join me in addressing the insane imbalance of wealth we see in the world today and do some effective reparations of their own. All money raised will go directly towards Givedirectly, and each £1000 represents 5 years of a human life, please give generously!
