Eevee Needs an Emergency MRI!

TLDR: we are raising $3500 for an emergency MRI for Eevee, who has recently and unexpectedly lost mobility in her back legs.

 

Hello friends!

 

For those of you who don't know her, Marco and I want to introduce you to Eevee, our little chonk black and white Chihuahua Maltese mix.

Eevee is five years old and she loves napping, regular poops, cuddles and pets, camping, the ocean, kayaking, any and all treats, and dancing! She's smart, sweet, tenacious, stubborn, and an amazing friend to us humans and her dog sibling, Mandu. She's a wonderful pup and we love her so much.

So when she started showing signs of feeling unwell last Wednesday night, we took her to the emergency vet to get her checked out. She came back with a slight fever but her bloodwork was normal. She was sent home after administering some fluids, pain, and anti-nausea medication with direction to take her to her regular vet the next day.

 

Before her appointment on Thursday afternoon, she continued to rest but seemed to be feeling okay. Our regular vet did a physical and administered an antibiotic to help with her mild fever and an appetite stimulant to help her get the nutrients she needed. As soon as we got home, we noticed she was unsteady on her feet and thought it was after effects of the pain medicine from the night before. When we took her out to for a bathroom break that night, her back legs were giving out on her and she was partially walking, limping, dragging her body in a way we'd never seen before.

This immediate change less than 24 hours after seeing two vets was alarming and we rushed to the emergency vet, again. Once there, we were lucky that the Neurologist was still at the hospital and they took her in for assessment. After another long night of waiting, the vet told us they believed Eevee had neurological damage from her spine. They recommended she stay overnight for observation and in the morning the Neurology team could look at her for further assessment.

In the morning the animal hospital called to let us know we could pick her up that afternoon and that we would talk about a care plan. Marco and I prepared a space for her to be able to "crate rest " and an accessible place for her to go to the bathroom. When we got to the hospital, they told us they believed there was neurological damage from a spinal injury and they recommended a MRI to pinpoint whether  her diagnosis is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a bacterial infection, or cancer.

 

At this point, we have spent over $2000 in 48 hours on medical care to be faced with a $3000 MRI which would inform the specific kind of care Eevee needs to get better. We were not prepared for these extreme medical costs and we are asking our friends and community to help us take care of our sweet pup.
