Lance Ebel's Cancer Fund

My name is Tonia Dreher and I have created this page for my brother Lance Ebel.

My brother's story is pretty simple. He was born and raised in North Dakota. Feeling committed to our country he joined the US Army in 1991 and was honorably discharged in 1999. He has worked for the same job ever since as an officer / Sergeant. In 1999 he met his now wife, Sarena and they have three beautiful boys (John, Jhett and Gryffyn).

In 2014 he was involved in a car accident where he was rear ended by a distracted driver and suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and had to be placed on medical leave. He returned to work with the Job as soon as medically cleared, often begging Dr's to allow him to return sooner.

In early 2016 he noticed a white discoloration on his tongue. He had it examined and tests were immediately ordered. Two weeks later, multiple tests and one biopsy and he received the official diagnosis of squamous carcinoma. Two weeks after that he prepared for an extensive surgery that would require him to be placed back on medical leave for a tentative time of 1-2 months. The day before surgery he and his wife were informed by his employer (which he has worked for since 1998) refused to allow him to receive donated leave from other employees (even though multiple employees wished to support him in his fight against cancer).  He headed into surgery with an uncertain future for him and his family.  After a 7 hour surgery he was on the mend. Six days and 22 staples later he was allowed to return home where he continues to heal and attend various forms of therapy recommended.

I am overjoyed to say that his test results came back negative and that no further cancer was found. Sadly, due to the extensive nature of the surgery, which resulted in a cut from one ear to almost the other in order to remove his lymph nodes and a loss of 1/3 of his tongue he has not been allowed to return to work. He will not be allowed to return to work until he has fully learned how to talk, eat, and move his head.  This means that his family of 5 will live off of one paycheck until his return to full duty.  Prognosis is good but still out there and uncertain.

Due to monthly follow ups 100 miles away in addition to bi-weekly therapy sessions and other treatment recommendations his family is in significant financial strain and emotional distress. We are all standing proudly with this soldier who not only has fought for his country but also for his life.

Please help us continue to support him and his family through this tumultuous time. Financial contributions will go towards medical bills, gas, and bills accrued from surgery as well as towards supporting his family until he is able to return back to full duty at work.

We want to thank everyone who has taken the time out of their day to read our story as well as support my brother and his family. We can not say how blessed we are to have such amazing people in our lives!
