The Silva's Journey

Aloha, My name is Danette Silva. My husband Randal, also known as Rusty Silva was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February of 2013. He had surgery at the Queens Medical Center on Oahu to remove his prostate. We returned back to Maui optimistic that the cancer was completely out of his body, but two months later at a routine check up the doctors noticed he had a 1.5 level of PSA (Prostate-specific Antigen), which was supposed to be at zero. Further testing confirmed that the cancer was still occupying my husband’s body. We were then referred to another doctor at Maui Memorial Medical Center who specializes in radiation therapy. Within the next few months my husband was aggressively treated with radiation therapy. After a couple of months, another blood test was taken and his PSA level was even higher. At that time there was no doubt my husband still had cancer. More tests and surgeries were done and while there is currently no cancer in his bones, they found that the cancer had spread to his lungs. The doctors diagnosed him with metastatic prostatic adenocarcinoma. My three sons and I want the very best treatment for him. Although we have not yet found the facility to best meet my husbands needs, our goal is to travel to the mainland to a cancer treatment center preferably within the next two months. Reluctantly, our insurance doesn’t cover all of the treatments and procedures, and we will have to pay out of pocket for the air and car travel, hotel and food expenses. My family and I humbly ask you, our friends and family to help in anyway possible. We appreciate anything and everything that you can donate, and we will be forever grateful. Thank you all so much for your time and consideration, and God Bless you all!
