Heroes aren’t born; they are made. Heroes don’t always have impeccable credentials, impressive education or superhuman strength. They are people who do what needs to be done to save a life.
On a cold and dark Sunday night a mother and daughter in southwest Manitoba slid off the road, tumbled and rolled down a huge embankment into the ditch below. The temperature was approaching the mid -20s. In the darkness, mom crawls to her daughter and covers her with her body to keep her warm as they wait for help.
Help doesn’t come. Cars go by on the road above but no one is coming to save them. It is now morning, the sun is up and mom and daughter have spent the night exposed to the elements, injured, dehydrated and traumatized.
Kristen Hiebert, with two broken arms, a broken neck, broken ribs, and a broken leg began to crawl towards the road. Kristen had to fight back the extreme pain that came with every single movement she made. She kept going, as more and more cars whizzed by on the road above her and her daughter Avery, 4 years of age cried for her from below. She kept going and finally after what seemed like forever of excruciating pain and crawling she reached the side of the road.
A passerby stopped and mother and daughter were taken to hospital. Kristen was airlifted to a large centre and is going through multiple surgeries. Avery, is reported to be in stable condition with no broken bones but further information is unavailable at this time.
The physical and mental recovery from this accident is going to be long and filled with challenges. As a community, fellow parents, single parents or just compassionate individuals, I believe we should step up and help Kristen and Avery in their recovery process.
Kristen Hiebert is a truly genuine hero who scaled an embankment to save her daughter even while suffering with a broken neck, broken arms, broken ribs and a broken leg.
