Help Us Cover Edwin Yu's Funeral

Edwin Yu was a beloved son, loving husband, and proud father of 2 children.

He was hospitalized in December 2020 due to COVID. For several weeks he was on a ventilator fighting the virus, but by a true miracle, Edwin survived his battle with COVID. However things were still difficult for him in the weeks after he was COVID free. He had suffered a heart attack at the hospital and had to have a tracheotomy so that he could breathe easier after the virus wrecked his body.

Eventually he was transferred to a nursing facility in Topanga from February to March. During this time my mom and I visited twice a week (even though we were only allowed one a week) bringing him food and spending time with him during his rehabilitation. But we could only ever see him through a glass window, and with every visit his determination to come home grew more and more.

By the end of March, his doctor gave us the ok to have him come home. It was nothing short of absolute joy that he experienced being surrounded by his family in his own home these last couple of months. My brother, Tyler, flew in for 2 weeks to celebrate his birthday and care for him alongside my mother and I. We thought that even if it was a long journey, he would get better and we as a family would do anything to help in his healing.

But as May came around his pain grew to be too much. He experienced neuropathy pain all over his body as well as difficulty breathing due to COPD. But he still tried to keep a brave face telling extended family there was nothing wrong. Only those of us at home could hear his aches and complaints as his body failed him. He may have survived COVID, but he never truly healed. The virus did unimaginable damage to his entire body, and although he wanted to keep fighting, even the strongest survivors grow weary from relentless pain everyday.

Looking back after the shock has settled down, we realize that maybe he knew his time was almost up. Our family never considered that he could leave us so soon, but he was the only one who truly knew the extent of his pain everyday. Edwin found solace though by living the last couple of weeks to his fullest. He ate all his favorite foods, enjoyed his signature Starbucks drinks, and watched all the movies he loved in his youth. He loved his wife who cared for him 24/7, and continued to dote on his children who were never far from his reach. If he was going to live, he was going to live his way.

Despite the tragedy of his passing, Edwin was home. Since the moment he woke up in the hospital to the second he left the nursing facility, all he wanted was to be in the home he built and made with his family. He deserved more time, but God was gracious enough to give him enough to come back home to us even for a couple months.

We created this GoFundMe to help us relieve the financial burdens of handling his funeral. It is painful enough to lose him so soon, but he wouldn't want us to drown in debt to honor his memory. Funds will go towards all funeral and memorial expenses in the coming weeks. Any additional funds we receive will help us care for our home as Edwin was the main provider for the family. The last thing he could ever want is his family losing our home. If you could open your hearts to helping our family in our time of grieving, we would be immensely grateful.
