EDWINA’S EMERGENCY HOUSING FUND
Our friend, Edwina Justin, age 47, who was diagnosed with Lupus almost 37 years ago, requires urgent help now. She is currently facing a CRITICAL HOUSING EMERGENCY.
Due to a series of unfortunate events, her current living situation in a temporary rental will end soon and then she will be essentially homeless, and without our help, facing an unknown future.
Diagnosed with RESPIRATORY FAILURE 7 years ago, and due to the degree of severity of her complications she was offered the option of assisted suicide, for which she was eligible for 4 years ago.It is only due to her sheer tenacity and Faith in God, that she has defied every prognosis given to her and her belief that she has yet to fulfill her purpose in life, that she survived so long.
The funds being requested through GO FUND ME will first help Edwina with her immediate housing needs. If there are further funds they will go towards helping Edwina overcome the difficulties caused by her medical conditions and focus her efforts on badly deserved healing and recovery.
These include costs for medicine, medical supplies and equipment, caregiver support and therapy, etc. NOT COVERED BY any program
Our 1st and foremost goal is to raise at least a minimum of $25,000 which would ONLY cover one year of an affordable ACCESSIBLE apartment rental. If this goal exceeds $150,000.00 plus, a permanent solution of a small custom “TINY HOME” Bungalow could be built and Edwina can TRULY be made safe for the remainder of her life.
When the idea to launch a GO FUND ME PAGE began, it was to initially raise funds to help Edwina cover the overwhelming costs of much needed medical care and equipment.
Since then, housing became an issue when Edwina was suddenly forced from the stability of a mortgage free family home which she shared with her elderly mother Nirmal who suffered a catastrophic stroke, which she survived but left her with a brain injury, and was taken to Montreal to live with an older sibling.
In a short period of time, their house was sold. Proceeds from the sale of the house are now being used exclusively for her Mother, and Edwina’s care has suffered as a result.
Edwina’s only goal is to gain enough support to be able to live with dignity and safety and gain enough strength to be able to generate her own income and independence.
ACCESSIBLE HOUSING NEEDS:
*Only the amount of funds that we are able to raise in this campaign, will dictate the type of housing she will be able to afford.
After months of searching hundreds of listings, the average price of such a unit is $1500 a month inclusive. Even if the initial price of a rental being listed is well under $1000, it often does not reflect the total costs, including all utilities and WIFI.
With no co-op or subsidized housing available, Edwina has had to resort to temporary accommodations at ANY cost.
LONG before COVID 19 she has been unable to receive care in a facility setting where the risk of the spread of infection has always been rampant.
Edwina must live in a closed, controlled environment and being able to do so, is her ONLY chance at survival.
Unfortunately, due to a number of symptoms created by her medications her housing needs are specific and require certain features for her to live safely and as independently as possible when a caregiver cannot be present.
At the moment, the most threatening of her conditions is the diagnosis of RESPIRATORY FAILURE (due to High Co2). This requires her to use Oxygen 24/7,
Combined with being severely immunocompromised, she suffers from a condition known as CUSHINGS SYNDROME. This has caused severe swelling throughout her body of more than 140 lbs of fluid retention (known as Edema). This has caused her to become virtually homebound, from open draining wounds that were the result of repeated injury to the delicate skin on her lower legs and feet.
*see link to pictures ( caution: some pictures may be graphic)
Because of these compounding medical conditions, she requires a living space that must be 100% carpet free, so that it can be easily steam sanitized. She also requires an accessible walk-in shower, her own en-suite laundry, and a 2nd bedroom with enough space that she can have 24/7 access to her most crucial medical equipment and wound care supplies.
FINALLY, due to ADDISONS DISEASE (also known as ADRENAL insufficiency) she is now unable to produce Cortisol (the critical stress hormone) and is also unable to regulate body temperature, making air conditioning a must.
The AIR B&B that she currently occupies is in a basement suite which makes her completely dependent on a caregiver to climb the stairs in order to receive any deliveries, so a secure locked building with an elevator is a must.
This is most especially true, if COVID 19 reaches a peak where any Caregiver might be prevented from visiting, for even a few days, as this could be catastrophic to her. The building must also have easy wheelchair and EMS access, in a safe, drug and violence free area.
As Edwina’s only guaranteed income is approximately $1700 from AISH, temporary housing has drained the very last of her financial resources and the constant stress of dealing with homelessness, has taken an even greater toll on her physical health.
Unfortunately, there are others like Edwina who suffer from Long-term, Chronic, Terminal illness, who will discover that many medical expenses and supplies are NOT, or ever will be covered by AISH, ADDL (Aids to Daily Living) or any other government agency.
Despite the BEST EFFORTS of her Primary Care Physician, the MOST dedicated Home Care Social Worker/ Case Manager, and her AISH Liaison, who continue to try to find resources, they have for the most part, exhausted every avenue of Government aided help.
ANY programs that might offer help, have long wait lists, or in many cases have created complex loopholes that easily disqualify many from utilizing any funding that presently exists.
CURRENT SITUATION:
Homelessness first became Edwina’s reality after the unsafe living situation in an apartment complex became untenable.
Chronic issues of prolonged periods of power and water shutdowns, constant mail and package theft, drug activity, break-ins and homeless people living in many areas of the building, resulted in a permanent lockdown of the outer doors.
Being that Edwina is clearly physically vulnerable, these poor and unsafe building conditions virtually imprisoned her and other tenants with disabilities within their own homes. Unfortunately, repeated attempts to address these concerns with Apartment Management proved to be unsuccessful.
Forced to quickly find safety, her only option, became an Air B&B.
Only meant as a temporary solution, but due to various other mitigating factors, a two week solution, has now become a nearly 7 month long stay.
This prolonged situation has depleted the very last of her personal savings this year.
With only days left on the booking, she now must find and secure appropriate accommodations by month end.
Unfortunately, many areas designated as Low Income housing will harbour the same type of societal issues and because of this she must avoid Low Income properties.
With every rental property viewing and potentially rushed move, she risks deadly exposure to the CORONA VIRUS.
To be accepted by any Management Company to sign a year long lease, it is standard policy that good credit, and a certain level of income must be demonstrated.
This, on average, is double or triple the amount of rent being asked, so Edwina needs to provide proof of the funds available, in order to demonstrate the ability to pay for a full year of rent before any landlords are willing to rent to her.
So for a $1200-$1500 rent, a minimum of $18,000- $20,000, plus deposit and down payment, as well as moving costs, must be calculated (which will be significant because of CORONA Transmission Protocols).
FAMILY STRUGGLES:
For several years, Edwina and her elderly Mother, Nirmal, shared expenses and lived together in a mortgage free family home.
Tragically after her mother’s stroke, Edwina broke her leg from a fall down the stairs and she was unable to care for her mother, who was taken to Montreal to live with her older sibling.
In a short period of time, their house was sold. Proceeds from the sale of the house are now being used exclusively for her Mother, who now suffers from Alzheimer's with only a very short term memory and Edwina’s care has suffered as a result.
Complicating things even further, is that Edwina’s family is currently unable to provide accommodation or any vital financial support.
Edwina has no income other than AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) which is a maximum monthly amount of approx $1700.
That is the total amount that is available to cover ALL costs of living (rent, all utilities, phone, WIFI), food and any and all other personal items and every medical expense not covered, (which averages at the very least $600 - $1100 a month).
To date, Edwina has already exhausted over $50,000 of her retirement and all of her personal savings. She continues to accumulate even more debt to cover the most basic needs of food and the most constant outrageous costs for ongoing medical expenses that should be covered.
A DREAM OF A TINY HOME :
Edwina must now find a way to live independently for the rest of her life. With the current rental market rates, which exceed far more than an average mortgage payment, the frightening issue of acquiring enough funds every year for apartment rent or lease will be a CONSTANT worry for her.
Especially with the new reality of a world threatened by a Global PANDEMIC and so many unknown factors ahead, she can then, very deservedly, focus her efforts to rest and heal, that she would otherwise not be able to accomplish.
*The GOAL AMOUNT for EMERGENCY HOUSING $25,000- ($150,000 plus for a TINY HOME)
CAREGIVER ASSISTANCE :
Another urgent need at this time involves funding to extend the hours of her caregiver from part-time to full time hours. These duties would include wound care, lymphatic massage, bathing, all of the outside shopping, and food preparation, housekeeping and cleaning. This expense is now FINALLY partially covered through a specialized program known as SELF MANAGED CARE, but the hours are minimal and the majority of these duties are not being addressed.
Any amount over and above what she had received had previously been paid from her own limited savings. Her current inadequate level of income, inability to work due to health status and the cost of paying fully for this additional care and the never ending list of medications, not covered by provincial health insurance, have not ONLY depleted her life and retirement savings completely, but caused the accumulation of thousands of dollars of debt to cover the most crucial of them.
Anyone who knows Edwina, knows that she has defied EVERY prognosis set against her. Through a great deal of research, whenever it was financially possible, she has used food and other very basic holistic common sense methods to reverse the terrible damage that the toxic medicine has been killing her with. This list now also includes Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain, Sjogrens Syndrome, and uncontrolled High Blood Pressure, just to name a few.
(Specific dietary changes, lymphatic massage, etc. are a few things that would reverse these conditions) With only the assistance of a caregiver, could these things be implemented effectively.
*The GOAL AMOUNT for CAREGIVER (1 year) Approximately $50,000
EDWINA’S GOALS FOR THE FUTURE :
Everyone that knows Edwina personally, knows of her loving nature and deep Faith in God.
They also know that no matter what her physical condition was, she has always tried to focus her efforts to help and serve others at every opportunity and that she wants to survive to continue to dedicate the rest of her life in service of others.
Using the knowledge she has gained over 37 years of living on both Pediatrics and Adult units, Edwina’s dream is to publish both Adult and Childrens books and produce inspirational Ted Talks and podcasts to help patients and their families learn how to navigate life in a medical world.
Despite the constant barriers set against her, she is well known for having a tremendous sense of humour and unrelenting attitude of gratitude for any help she receives. She could not have fought harder, and has tried for far too long to avoid asking others for help, but now, her life literally depends on it.
Time is of the essence, so please give generously and reach out to your social network and most personally influential people that might be able to commit a generous donation.
If you are a small business owner, you could reach out to your own clients, giving a portion of services for a day or week or possibly even presenting a friendly challenge to other businesses to achieve this goal.
If anyone wants to join TEAM EDWINA and help organize fundraising events with church or community groups this would be an absolute answer to prayer.
