Edwin & Thor: Best Friend Survivors Need Your Help

Meet Thor and Edwin,  two incredible survivors found in the most horrific of conditions. They were picked up as strays on the verge of death suffering from starvation, dehydration, and tick infestation.

Thor had a body condition score of 1. There being no score lower - something we haven't seen before at Family Dog Rescue. He is a smaller than usual husky, but he weighed only 10 pounds which was estimated to be less than half of what he should have weighed. Unable to walk, he was immediately given a blood transfusion, antibiotics, and remained hospitalized for 5 days. His last night in the hospital his fever spiked to 104. The next day he was stabilized and flown via Paws n Pilots to Napa County where he was picked up by his foster.

Edwin was in slightly better physical condition but the two had formed a bond at the shelter in San Bernardino and it was thought best to keep them together to aid in their recovery. On a rainy day in early April, Edwin hitched a ride north in the twin engine Piper plane with his best friend.

In their cozy foster home, Thor showed remarkable progress over the next 14 days. His body weight more than doubled reaching 24 pounds. He was able to walk on his own! A diet of chicken and rice, combined with antibiotics, served as the foundation for his steady recovery. Throughout it all, Edwin stayed by his side.

Thor has a severe head tilt attributed to an unexplained head trauma and tends to favor his left side. This does not stop him from playing with other dogs. We think his crooked gait is endearing and are so pleased to see his progress.

While Edwin had a higher body condition score, he was covered in ticks. He’s a cheery fellow, and always wants to be where the action is. He wags his tail from morning til night. However, poor Edwin is suffering. Sadly, due to neglect most of his teeth have rotted, becoming grey, unrecognizable, and infected in his mouth.

We're honored to rescue these two deserving dogs, but we need your help. The initial emergency vet bills to keep both dogs alive total $1,741. These poor boys also need dental surgery estimated to cost about $2,500.

Please help us ensure that these incredible survivors get the final care that they so desperately need. With your help, Thor and Edwin will be on their journey to a loving home!

Thor above at just 10 pounds, enjoying his first wholesome meal of homemade chicken and rice. The first step on a long journey.

Any funds raised that are not used for medical care for this dog will go towards medical services for one of our other dogs.
